Gateshead Birders is a group of very keen birders who study and record the natural history throughout the borough. Gateshead has several countryside sites owned and managed by the Council and these are freely open for visitors to enjoy a wide range of woodlands, meadows, ponds and riverside walks and bridleways. 146 Species recorded so far in 2008 (114 of them photographed) plus escaped Barnacle Goose and White Stork. Also the subspecies Scandinavian Herring Gull and White Wagtail

Birds - Red-throated Diver, Black-necked Grebe, Little Egret, Barnacle Goose, Pintail, Garganey, Common Scoter, Red-breasted Merganser, Marsh Harrier, Quail, Little Stint, Turtle Dove, Ring-necked Parakeet, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Tree Pipit, Pied Flycatcher, Common Redpoll and Lapland Bunting
Dragonflies-Red-veined and Yellow-veined Darter
Butterflies - Green Hairstreak, Dark Green Fritillary and Clouded Yellow

153 Species recorded so far in 2007 plus introduced Red Kite and escaped Harris Hawk and Ring-necked Parakeet.Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Shag, Hen Harrier and Puffin reported but not included in the totals as no details yet available. Also the subspecies Scandinavian Herring Gull, Kumlien's Gull, Continental Cormorant and White Wagtail.

23 Species of Butterfly recorded in 2007, 14 species of Dragonfly and 341 species of plant in flower.

Dragonflies-Red-veined and Yellow-veined Darter and Black-tailed Skimmer
Butterflies - Green Hairstreak, Dark Green Fritillary and Clouded Yellow

152 Species were recorded in 2006 plus introduced Red Kite and escaped Ring-necked Parakeet. Also 4 subspecies White & Blue-headed Wagtail, Scandinavian Herring and Scandinavian Lesser Black-backed Gulls.

149 Species were recorded in 2005 plus escaped Barnacle Goose,Ruddy Shelduck, White Stork, Red-tailed Hawk and introduced Red Kite

22 Species of Butterfly , 14 species of Dragonfly and 340 species of plant in flower also recorded in 2005

144 species were recorded in 2004 plus escaped White Stork, Wood Duck and introduced Red Kite.

23 species of Butterfly, 14 species of Dragonfly & 435 species of flowering plant also recorded in 2004

This is the peak time for this excellent predator, with some individual being seen into early November in some years.

Little Grebes at Kibblesworth

Best known for its Dragonflies and adjacent Grayling butterflies the ponds. especially the main pond have attracted Greenshank, Green Sandpiper and Crossbill as well these breeding Little Grebes the past couple of years.

A Zebra Jumping Spider (Salticus scenicus) at Clara Vale

This distinctive species, which is most often seen hunting on sunny walls in gardens and houses is quite common.

Friday 5th September 2008

Shibdon Pond - 10.00 - 10.45 from hide - 1 Kingfisher, 39 Redshank, 10 Lapwing, 70+ Teal, 7 Shoveler, 4 Little Grebe, 3 House Martin, several Swallow and a Chiffchaff calling. 2 Green Sandpipers, 1 Sedge Warbler, calling Water Rail and teh Tree-creeper seen mid afternoon.
Burdon Moor - Whinchat still present
Cowen Road, Blaydon
- Probable Migrant Hawker flew past

Thursday 4th September 2008

Cowen Road, Blaydon - Chiffchaff calling, at 11am in grounds and still House Martins high above.
Lamesley Water Meadows - Short-eared Owl seen nearby from Pennyfine Road.
Bill Quay Farm - 1, possibly 2, Speckled Wood in the wildflower meadow.

Shibdon Pond - 2 Green Sandpiper, 70 + Redshank plus 2 Gadwall , 4 Shoveller and Teal
Derwent meadows - 10 Curlew but no butterflies today
Lamesley Water Meadows - 1, possibly 2 Green Sandpiper

Tuesday 2nd September 2008

Lamesley water meadows - 1 Kingfisher & 1 Grey Wagtail.
Shibdon Pond -
1 Kingfisher, 1 Green Sandpiper, 80+ Teal & a Treecreeper.
Burdon Moor
- 14:00hrs - 1 Whinchat (good views from the circular footpath)
Cowen Road, Blaydon
- Chiffchaff calling again and a Hawker sp
Sherburn Towers - 16 Red Kites cam into roost.
Rowlands Gill - Hobby flew over, probbaly a juvenile and 1-2 Common Buzzard in the area for last 6 days

Monday 1st September 2008

Kibblesworth brickworks pools - Kestrel and Sparrowhawk over main pond. Butterflies:- 6 Common Blue, 4 Small .Heath, 4 Wall, 1 Peacock, several Green-veined White. Dragonflies:- Several Common Darter, 2 female Common Hawker laying, 1 male Southern Hawker. Observer's first sighting at this site of female Black Darter laying on pond near entrance.
Rowlands Gill - A big female Goshawk came over early afternoon, possibly the same bird was seen earlier, saw soaring with a Red Kite in the distance late morning over the farm, buzzard-sized with distinct bands on spread tail but the observer couldn’t tell whether vivid white showing at rear was rump or coverts as view then was all too brief by the time he got his binoculars on it.
Crawcrook Quarry - Lesser Whitethroat and Green Sandpiper present
Shibdon Pond - 10 Small White ,4 Small Copper dozens of Common Darter
Blaydon - Common Darters on the move? - 1 at Greenbank and 2 at Cowen Road today.
