Sites in the Borough

Burdon Moor

This is a new area is on Ravensworth Fell ane has proved to be a very good site alread.

If you get a chance to check this site, its on the Sunniside to Stanley road (A6076) and directly opposite the Tanfield Railway. The council have just put in a small carpark there. Walk along the footpath until you get to the big wall on the left but often Whitethroats, Stonechats etc can be seen from the path in the bushes on the left before you get there. Anyway veer left off the path past the wall and there are some ponds here in the fenced off fields with the Exmoor ponies in. These pools are excellent for Dragonflies and the fields here held 13 Wheatears in April 2006. A Short-eared Owl sometimes hunts at the back of the fields. In the winter the fields get quite damp and its where the Jack Snipe are regularly flushed. This whole area is the best spot in the borough for Brown Hare.
