Peacock - 1 at Kibblesworth Brickworks pools early in month
Small Tortoiseshell - Small numbers from early in the month but infux noted from 10th - including 12+ at the Derwent Walk CP on 13th and many records subsequently.

Painted Lady - 2 at Gibside on 18th.
Comma - 2 at Clara Vale on 8th and 6+ at the Derwent Walk CP on 13th. 1-4 at Clara Vale on 13th, Shibdon Pond on 14th, Cowen Road, Blaydon on 15th and both Kibblesworth and Ryton Willows and the Derwent Walk CP on 17th-25th

Ringlet - Noted from mid month. 1 noted at Kibblesworth on 19th and another aslong the Derwent walk CP on the 25th were the last.

Speckled Wood - Singles at Clara Vale on 2nd and Ryton Willows on 11th.1 at Kibblesworth brickworks pools on 21st.
Grayling - Noted at 2 sites in the Kibblesworth area on 2nd and 7 there on 9th and 3 on 19th.


White-letter Hairstreak - Noted behind the Golden Lion pub at Winlaton, on the Derwent Walk on 9th (2), 11th(1), 13th(5), 17th (8) and 25th (3-4)

Purple Hairstreak - 12+ noted at Kibblesworth brickworks pools on 17th with 2 there on 19th and 9 on 21st

Small Heath - Noted from mid month at several sites

Common Blue - Good numbers noted at several sites including 30 at Kibblesworth on 19th andf several on 21st.

Bird-cherry Ermine moth- A large web of caterpillars noted at Far Pasture

 

Four-spotted Chaser - 4-10 at Kibblesworth 1st to 21st
Broad-bodied Chaser - 1 at Burdon Moor on 2nd and 16th and a pair on 21st..
Black-tailed Skimmer - Several at Kibblesworth on 3rd

Large Red Damselfly - Several at Kibblesworth Brickworks pools on 2th
Blue-tailed Damselfly - Good numbers at Kibblesworth Brickworks pools on 4th
Common Blue Damselfly - 2 at Kibblesworth Brickworks pools on 4th
Azure Damselfly -Good numbers at Kibblesworth Brickworks pools on 4th and several on wing despite weather on 17th.
Banded Demoiselle - 1 at Kibblesworth Brickworks pools on 1st

Common Darter - 2 at Kibblesworth Brickworks pools on 3rd and several terneral on 17th there

Common Hawker - 1 at Kibblesworth Brickworks pools on 9th
Southern Hawker - At Thornley woods pond on 2nd, An emerging adult was seen with 14 other exuviae counted around the pond. Singles near Ryton on 17th and at Ryton Willows Curling pond on 18th.

Emperor - 1-3 noted on several occassions on 3rd-21st

Golden Ringed Dragonfly - Noted on 2 occassions at Gibside - the first records for many years.

 

Bombus hypnorum - One at Whickham 21st-28th June, probably only the 2nd Gateshead record.

Large White - Several at Kibblesworth Brickworks pools on 1st, 6+ in the Mount Escomb area on 5th.

Green-veined White - Several at Kibblesworth Brickworks pools on 1st
Orange Tip - Singles at Cowen Road, Blaydon and Kibblesworth Brickworks pools on 1st. Single male in the Mount Escomb area on 5th and a female at Shibdon on 11th.

Common Blue - 2 at Stargate on 3rd and 1 at Kibblesworth Brickworks pools on 4th. Several at Wardley on 11th

4-spot Chaser - 10 at Kibblesworth Water Meadows on 1st with 43 there on 4th and 135 on 5th. Up to 100 regular up to the end of the month
Broad-bodied Chaser - 1 photographed on a pool between Urpeth Forge and Mount Escomb. Later, others noted at Burdon Moor (up to 4) and Stargate.
Black-tailed Skimmer - Several from mid month at Kibblesworth with 7 on 21st.

Emperor - 1-2 noted at Kibblesworth and Stargate in the second half of the month.
Southern Hawker - 1 at Gibside on 30th was the first.

Peacock - 2 at Westfield on 4th and 1 at Stargate on 15th and 1-2 at Tanfield railway on 17th. 2 at Kibblesworth brickworks pools on 23rd

1 at Westfield on 4th and 1-3 at Kibblesworth Brickworks pools and Lamesley on 23rd.

Speckled Wood - Two at Westfield were the first of the year on 4th, followed by one at Thornley on 20th. Sinles at two diffent sites along the Derwent Walk and 1 at Shibdon all on 23rd.
Green-veined White - 1 at Stargate on 15th and several at Kibblesworth brickworks pools on 23rd
Small White - 4 at Urpeth Bridge on 9th and 1 at Lamesley water meadows same day, plus 1-2 at Tanfield railway on 17th. and several at Kibblesworth brickworks pools on 23rd
Large White - 1 at Urpeth Bridge on 9th and several at Kibblesworth brickworks pools on 23rd
Orange-tip - 6 at Urpeth Bridge on 9th and several at Stargate on 15th. Several more at Kibblesworth brickworks pools on 23rd and 5 at Lamesley Water Meadows

Dingy Skipper- 6 at Stargate on 15th were the first of the year. Single at Shibdon and 2 at Tanfield Railway on 17th and 1 again at Shibdon on 20th. At least 128 on the wing 21st at Andrews House Station/ Tanfield railway area in Gateshead, including 50 in a timed count of 15 minutes! Cracking site well worth further investigation. Several at at Kibblesworth brickworks pools on 23rd when several were near Metro Centre. Good numbers at the Tanfield site a few days later.

Peacock - 1 at Shibdon Pond on 1st and 5 there on 8th and 2 at Clara Vale LNR on 6th. Several at Clara Vale on 9th-10th. 1 at Lamelsey Water Meadows on 11th. 10+ at Shibdon on 16th and again on 21st, 1-3 there 22nd-23rd and 30th.
Small Tortoiseshell - 3 at Bishop's Pool on 8th and 2 at Clara Vale on 9th-11th and 2 at Kibblesworth brickworks pool on 11th. 10+ at Shibdon on 16th when 1 at Cowen Road, Blaydon. Max of 5 at Shibdon on 21st-30th

Small White - Two at Shibdon and a single Blaydon on 16th were the first of the year. 2+ more at Shibdon on 21st-23rd & 30th
Large White - 1 at Shibdon on 21st
Orange-tip - 5 at Shibdon on 21st all seemed to emerge from one place. 1-2 there on 23rd. 1 in a garden at Clara Vale on 24th. Others noted at Blaydon, Clara Vale, Shibdon, Kibblesworth and Lamesley 26th-30th

Green-veined White - 1 at Shibdon Pond on 16th and another on 23rd and severl including a mating pair there on 30th.

Moths - Additional species trapped on 9th/10th were Early Tooth-striped, Powdered Quaker, Twin-spotted Quaker, Emmelina Mondactyla and Diurnea fagella. Also a Herald was seen at Ryton on 10th. Early Thorn was added on 23rd.

March 2010

Moths - Another Chestnut, this time seen at Strother Hills on 2nd followed by a trapping session on the 5th producing 2 Pale Brindled Beauty and a Dark Chestnut. A Chestnut was trapped at Clara Vale on 14th March and an Oak Beauty there on the 16th. Additional moths trapped on the 17th were Rhigognostis incarnatella 1, Parsnip Moth 5, March Moth 2, Oak Beauty 2, Dotted Border 2, Common Quaker 6, Clouded Drab 4, Hebrew Character 2 and Chestnut 2. Then 3 Yellow Horned, Small Quaker, Early Grey and Satellite added on 19th.

Red Admiral - 1 at Thornley Woods on 4th was the first butterfly of the year.
Comma - 1 at Clara Vale on 10th
Peacock - 2 at Shibdon Pond on 18th were the first of the year

- First of the year was one at Lintzford on 18th.

Wood Ant - Many noted rebuilding nest at Strother Hills on 10th

Ypsolopha ustella - A micro moth was seen, then caught during the day at Strother Hills on the 28th.

Moths - Chestnut and Early Moth were the first two species of the year, both trapped on 27th.

Honey Bee - Several Honey Bees were around last year's nest in the oak tree at Lamesley water Meadows on 18th
