Sabre Wasp (Rhyssa pursuasoria)

This Giant ichneumon fly/wasp was brought to the photographer by a resident in Clara Vale who found 2 in their house, probably from logs. Apparently when they emerged from pit props 1000+ft underground, miners were alarmed by them , thinking they could sting. This species is the largest ichneumon in Britain, and one of the largest in Europe at up to 40mm plus another 40mm ovipositor. They usually don't emerge until July or August but the warmth of being indoors will have made them emerge much earlier.
