"Yellow-tailed" Bumblebee at Shibdon

We did not know what this was so we contacted the Bumblebee Conservation Trust. This was what they told us "The standard way to estimate the age of a bumblebee worker is to look at the state of the wings and look for 'wing-wear'. The bee in this photo has very tattered wings indicating that it is probably relatively old. This is very important to know when identifying a bee as two things can happen as a bee ages. Firstly, they can start to bald meaning that instead of the distinctive colour patterns we are used to looking for, the black cuticle of the bee begins to show through in some patches and can make the bee appear much darker than it once would have been. Secondly, the colours can become bleached in the sun and this is what has happened in this case. The red of the tail has faded and become yellow in the sunlight, giving the bee a very unusual appearance."
