Three years years ago it reappeared along the River Tees in the south of Durham and is now a resident breeding species again. I saw 28 specimens in a couple of hours on one Durham site alone last year. In Northumberland it has spread southwards some 30 miles along the coastline in the past five years, and has since been found on several suitable inland sites, up to 15 miles from the coast. per Harry Eales]

Twenty-plume Moth Alucita hexadactyla

Trapped at Clara Vale [Photo: Gordon Pollinger]
The English name of this unusual little moth is something of a misnomer, as each wing is separated into 6 'plumes'. The scientific name is more accurate, meaning 'six-fingered'.

The only British member of its family, it is fairly common throughout, and can be found in the adult stage at almost any time of year.

The larva feeds on the leaves and buds of honeysuckle (Lonicera), and the moth is nocturnal and attracted to light.
