Peacock Butterfly - 2 at Clara Vale on 6th.
Red Admiral - 1 at Pit Yard on 2nd.

Southern Hawker - 2 near Crawcrook on 9th


October 2003


Wall - 3rd generation from 2nd.
Small Copper and Commas -
fresh early in month

Ruddy Darter
- Strother Hills on 14th
Common Darter
- Still a pair mating at Watergate on 27th and several at both Far Pasture and Shibdon on 28th


September 2003

Comma - 2 at Burdon Moor on 14th [PWD/ML/KR], the first record for the latter site.
Small Tortoiseshell - Still being seen throughout the borough up to the 14th. 12 at Bewes Hills on 13th.
Peacock - Singles at Bewes Hills on 13th andt Burdon Moor on 14th
Red Admiral - Still being seen throughout the borough up to the 14th. 12 at Bewes Hills on 13th.
Painted Lady - Still being seen throughout the borough up to the 14th. 37 at Bewes Hills on 13th.
Small Copper - Singles at Bewes Hills on 13th and Timber Beach on 14th
Large & Small Whites - Still being seen throughout the borough up to the 14th. Common Blue - 6 at Bewes Hills on 13th.

Silver Y - 1 at Bewes Hills on 13th.

Blue-tailed Damselfly - Several still at Burdon Moor on 14th
Southern Hawker - Noted at Shibdon Pond and Burdon Moor
Common Hawker - One possible reported at Burdon Moor on 7th.
Migrant Hawker - Noted at Shibdon Pond and Burdon Moor on 7th, the first record for the latter site. 4 seen again at Shibdon on 21st, last seen on 29th.
Common Darter - Good numbers at Shibdon & Burdon Moor upto 14th. Many ovi-positing at the later.
Black Darter - Good numbers at Burdon Moor on 7th & 14th
Ruddy Darter - Noted at Shibdon Pond and Burdon Moor. Also at Far Pasture on 15th and Clara Vale (egg laying).

Emerald Damselfly - Burdon Moor on 21st (pair in tandem)


August 2003

Peacock - 1 at Timber Beach on 24th
Painted Lady - many records throughout the borough during the month
Large & Small Whites - Seen throughout the borough
Small Copper - 1 noted at Burdon Moor on 10th

Blue-tailed Damselfly - Several at Burdon Moor on 10th

Ruddy Darter - Noted at Shibdon Pond on 18th and Clara Vale LNR on the 20th [see photo right].

Black Darter - Noted egg laying at Burdon Moor on 9th.

Migrant Hawker - Recorded at Shibdon Pond.


July 2003

Red Admiral - regular throughout the borough all month
Painted Lady - several records throughout the borough from 27th
Large & Small Whites - Seen throughout the borough
Antler Moth (Cerapteryx Graminis) - 1 caught in daylight in the scrub behind Shibdon Pond on 27th


Common Blue Damselfly
- Present at Far Pasture on 20th


June 2003

Large & Small Whites - Seen throughout the borough

Blue-tailed Damselfly - Present at Far Pasture on 1st
Azure Damselfly - 2 present at Far Pasture on 1st

Green-veined White - Present at several sites from 4th.


April 2003

Comma - 4 Shibdon Pond on 23rd
Orange Tip - Noted at Shibdon Pond from 13th
