The right hand photo, initially recorded as Eristalis pertinax -but is probably E. tenax you can just about
make out a dark band of hairs on the eyes.

Widespread and very common. A pronounced migrant and with a very long flight period. dults disperse widely and visit a wide range of flowers. Can be abundant in gardens. Adults overwinter (not infrequently in houses), and occasional individuals can be seen during warm spells throughout the winter
