Frequent in a number of ponds and wet areas of ground. Very tall, can be over 3 m. Spikelets c 10-16 mm ID: Ligule consists of a fringe of hairs. Spikelets contain long silky hairs and 1-5 lemmas extending beyond the hairs as fine points whose ends are approximately level. Other features: Our tallest grass, forming large stands in ponds and sometimes in wet ground with no standing water. Panicles purple. Leaves fall off in autumn but stems and panicles remain through winter.
