This is a common poppy of disturbed or cultivated soils. The species can be divided into two subspecies on the basis, amongst other things, of the colour of its latex (yellow or white). |
Casual of waste and cultivated ground. Flower diameter c 3-7 cm ID: Differs from the Common Poppy, P rhoeas, familiar in much of the UK , in having long fruit capsules that narrow downwards from the top rather than short rounded ones that bulge in the middle. Other features: Flowers do not usually have black centres like Common Poppy, but occasionally they do.
