Frequent in lowland grassy areas and roadsides, likes rich damp ground. Spikelets c 5 mm long. Spike 5-10 mm wide. ID: Spikelets (excluding awn) > 4 mm. Spike a tight cylinder tapering at both ends. Hairs on glume's outside midrib ascending (see picture with ruler) Other features: Typical tallish grass height, much taller than Marsh Foxtail. Spikelets one-flowered, lemma enclosed in glumes but awn protruding.
