2009 Notable Records and first flowers August 2009 Thlaspi arvense (Field Penny-cress), Aethusa cynapium (Fool's Parsley), Centranthus ruber (Red Valerian), Euphorbia helioscopia (Sun Spurge), Rumex conglomeratus (Clustered Dock), Senecio aquaticus (Marsh Ragwort), Medicago sativa (Lucerne). Galeopsis tetrahit (Common Hemp-nettle), Galium verum (Lady's Bedstraw), Urtica urens (Small Nettle), Solidago gigantea (Early Goldenrod), Solidago virgaurea (Go ldenrod) and Nymphoides peltata (Fringed Water-lily) all recorded in the Shibdon to Ryton/Stargate area - 1st to 6th. July 2009 Fallopia convolvulus (Black Bindweed) was seen on the 3rd, Sea Plantain (Plantago maritima) noted on the slipway where Derwent joins the Tyne, and behind Shibdon/Derwenthaugh Meadows there was Common Toadflax (Linaria vulgaris), Purple Toadflax (Linaria purpurea), Hemlock (Conium maculatum), Musk Mallow (Malva moschata), Wood burdock (Arctium nemorosum), Amphibious Bistort (Persicaria amphibia) and Hedge Bindweed (Calystegia sepium). with Field Bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis) and Welted Thistle (Carduus crispus ) at at Timber beach all on the 5th, together with Long-headed Poppy (Papaver dubium) nearby . Blue Fleabane (Erigeron acer), Prickly Lettuce (Lactuca serriola), Brown Sedge (Carex disticha) and False fox-sedge (Carex otrubae) were near Costco the same day when Perforate St. John's-wort (Hypericum perforatum), Common Knapweed (Centaurea nigra ), Common Restharrow (Ononis repens), Upright Hedge-parsley (Torilis japonica), Lesser Spearwort (Ranunculus flammula), Opium Poppy (Papaver somniferum) , Devil's-bit Scabious (Succisa pratensis ), Wild Parsnip (Pastinaca sativa), Great Willowherb (Epilobium hirsutum) and Hoary Willowherb (Epilobium parviflorum) were all at Lamesley railway sidings/Longacre Woods. On the 7th, Field Madder (Sherardia arvensis) was noted at Derwenthaugh.
Bee orchid is now growing in the red car park at the Metrocentre. [Dr. Caleb Leeke] At Shibdon on the 9th, Bladder Campion (Silene vulgaris) was noted and Tutsan (Hypericum androsaemum) was nearby on 10th. Senecio jacobaea (Common Ragwort), Campanula rotundifolia (Harebell), Atriplex patula (Common Orache), Teucrium scorodonia (Wood Sage) and Achillea millefolium (Yarrow) was seen in flower on 10th, while on 18th-19th found Eupatorium cannabinum (Hemp-agrimony), Verbascum lychnitis (White Mullien) and (Oenothera stricta ) Fragrant Evening-primrose at the Birtley railway sidings, the latter 2 both new for Gateshead. Goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea) noted on 24th. pium graveolens (Wild Celery), Aster tripolium (Sea Aster), Melilotus albus (White Melilot) and Chenopodium album (Fat-hen) noted at Dunston Staithes on 26th. Red Bartsia (Odontites verna), Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) and Water Mint (Mentha aquatica) on 29th.
Goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea) [George Simpson]June 2009 Pilosella aurantiaca (Fox-and-cubs), Lapsana communis (Nipplewort) and Artemisia vulgaris (Mugwort) were in flower on 1st and Biting stonecrop (Sedum acre) and Foxglove [Digitalis purpurea] were seen next day.
Biting Stonecrop at Shibdon [George Simpson] The 3rd June had the first Gateshead record for the garden escape Campanula poscharskyana (Trailing Bellflower). Also seen were Cirsium palustre (Marsh Thistle), Cirsium vulgare (Spear Thistle), Epilobium montanum (Broad-leaved Willow-herb), Malva sylvestris (Common Mallow), Ranunculus sceleratus (Celery-leaved Buttercup), Trisetum flavescens (Yellow Oat-grass), Self-heal (Prunella vulgaris), Creeping Cinquefoil (Potentilla reptans) and Carex pendula (Pendulous Sedge)
Fox-and-cubs at Shibdon [George Simpson] New species on 7th were Stachys sylvatica (Hedge Woundwort), Lychnis flos-cuculi (Ragged-Robin), Hypochaeris radicata (Cat's-ear) and Veronica beccabunga (Brooklime) at Lamesley Water Meadows, Papaver rhoeas (Common Poppy), Sinapis arvensis (Charlock), Lathyrus nissolia (Grass Vetchling), Chaerophyllum temulum (Rough Chervil), Rumex acetosa (Common Sorrel), Rumex crispus (Curled Dock), Melilotus altissimus (Tall Melilot), Rosa caesia subsp. glauca (Glaucous Dog-rose) and Rosa sherardii (Sherard's Downy-rose) at Birtley reedbeds and Anisantha diandra (Great Brome), Alisma plantago-aquatica (Common Water-plantain), Daucus carota subsp. carota (Wild Carrot), Lemna minor (Common Duckweed) and Alchemilla mollis (Garden Lady's-mantle) in the Kibblesworth brickworks pools area. The 15th found - Large Bindweed (Calystegia silvatica)at Blaydon, the 16th, Bee Orchid (Ophrys apifera), Field scabious (Knautia arvensis) and Ribbed Melilot (Melilotus officinalis) at Shibdon, Perennial Sow-thistle (Sonchus arvensis), there 2 days later .and the 22nd had both Common Spotted Orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii) and it's hybrid with Northern Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhyza x venusta) at Derwenthaugh Meadow. The 21st has Heath Bedstraw (Galium saxatile) at Shibdon, Large-flowered Evening-primrose (Oenothera glazioviana) nearby the next day with Rosebay Willowherb (Epilobium angustifolium),
Great Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) and Common Centaury (Centaurium erythraea)at Shibdon on 24th and Bristly Oxtongue (Picris echioides) on 25th. Fianlly, the 27th found Hairy Brome (Bromus ramosus)
. May 2009 Ranunculus hederaceus (Ivy-leaved Crowfoot) was found in flower on Ravensworth Fell on 1st. Woods in the Derwent valley on the 3rd produced the following species in flower Equisetum sylvaticum (Wood Horsetail), Equisetum telmateia (Great Horsetail), Aesculus hippocastanum (Horse-chestnut), Allium ursinum (Ramsons), Ajuga reptans (Bugle), Fragaria vesca (Wild Strawberry), Rumex sanguineus (Wood Dock), Elytrigia repens (Common Couch), Cardamine flexuosa (Wavy Bitter-cress), Fagus sylvatica (Beech), Ilex aquifolium (Holly), Taxus baccata (Yew) and Acer campestre (Field Maple). Also on the 1st, Herb Robert (Geranium robertianum) , Wood Cranesbill (Geranium sylvaticum ), and White Campion (Silene latifolia) and the 4th Red Campion (Silene dioica), Water Cress (Rorippa nasturtium-aquaticum) and Wood Avens (Geum urbanum), all above on Derwent Walk. Also female Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) which is quite scarce, the vast majority of plants in the NE being male.
Female Butterbur [ Robert Stonehouse] The 5th found Smooth Meadow-grass (Poa pratensis) in flower and Veronica agrestis (Green Field-speedwell still present at Cowen road. 100+ species of plant in the 1km square centred on Ryton Goldf course including Early Hair-grass (Aira praecox) and Common Polypody (Polypodium vulgare) on 8th [perhaps the f irst record since 1980s], when Acer platanoides (Norway Maple) in flower near Birtley. Pilosella officinarum (Mouse-ear-hawkweed) at Cowen Road, Dunston and Vicia sativa subsp. segetalis (Common Vetch), Reseda lutea (Wild Mignonette), Anagallis arvensis (Scarlet Pimpernel) and Lotus corniculatus (Common Bird's-foot-trefoil) in the Shibdon area on the 9th. The Bowes valley on 10th produced Veronica officinalis (Heath Speedwell), Centaurea montana (Perennial Cornflower), Ranunculus acris (Meadow Buttercup), Pentaglottis sempervirens (Green Alkanet), Quercus robur (Pedunculate Oak), Veronica arvensis (Wall Speedwell), Geranium dissectum (Cut-leaved Crane's-bill), Fumaria officinalis (Common Fumitory), the real Hyacinthoides hispanica (Spanish Bluebell), Vaccinium myrtillus (Bilberry), Laburnum anagyroides (Laburnum), Tilia x vulgaris (Lime), Salix Salix fragilis (Crack-willow) and Poa trivialis (Rough Meadow-grass). The 13th-15th at Shibdon found in flower. Caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyris ), Kidney Vetch(Anthyllis vulneraria ), Smith’s Pepperwort (Lepidium heterophyllum),
Thyme-leaved Speedwell (Veronica serpyllifolia), Bittersweet (Solanum dulcamara ), Japanese Rose (Rosa rugosa )
Japanese Rose (Rosa rugosa ) [George Simpson] and Hairy Tare (Vicia hirsuta)
and Trifolium pratense (Red Clover) at nearby Cowen Road. In the Lamesley area Sorbus intermedia (Swedish Whitebeam) was in flower on 17th. Rosa canina (Dog-rose), Symphytum officinale (Common Comfrey), Bromus hordeaceus (Soft-brome) and Lamium hybridum (Cut-leaved Dead-nettle) on 19th. The cultivated variety of Wood Dock - Red-viened or Bloody Dock (Rumex sanguineus var. sanguineus ) was identified today after several days of research after a plant was found at Shibdon where Geranium pyrenaicum (Hedgerow Crane's-bill) and Euphrasia nemorosa (Eyebright) were found on 21st. Rubus idaeus (Raspberry), Iris pseudacorus (Yellow Flag ), Scrophularia nodosa (Common Figwort), Anisantha sterilis (Barren Brome), Trifolium campestre (Hop Trefoil), Trifolium dubium (Lesser Trefoil) and Heracleum sphondylium (Hogweed) noted on 23rd

(Bramble) and Reseda luteola (Weld) were at Shibdon and Anisantha sterilis (Barren Brome), Agrostis capillaris (Common Bent), Trifolium repens (White Clover) and Arrhenatherum elatius (False Oat-Grass) was at Birtley and Dactylorhiza purpurella (Northern Marsh-orchid) at Kibblesworth all on the 25th/26th followed by Tragopogon pratensis (Goat's-beard), Sonchus asper (Prickly Sow-thistle), Ranunculus repens (Creeping Buttercup), Potentilla anserina (Silverweed), Veronica serpyllifolia (Thyme-leaved Speedwell) and Epilobium obscurum (Short-fruited Willowherb) on 28th

Garlic-mustard (Alliaria petiolata ) and Field Horsetail ( Equisetum arvense) in flower. Common Scurvygrass (Cochlearia officinalis) on the Tyne at Derwent Marina was in flower on the 6th. Woodhouses Lane, Fellside Park had Yellow Archangel (Lamiastrum galeobdolon subsp. montanum). Flowering Currant (Ribes sanguineum) and Dog`s Mercury (Mercurialis perennis) on the 7th

. On the 8th,a revisit to Yellow Archangel today showed patches on some plants suggesting ssp argentatum? Also on Clockburnside Lonnen flowering Common Dog Violet (Viola riviniana). On cut grass beside Fellside Parkway Slender Speedwell (Veronica filiformis) and both Petty Spurge (Euphorbia peplus) and Field Forget-me-not (Myosotis arvensis) noted near Birtley. Garden Pansy (Viola x wittrockiana) and Spotted Meddick (Medicago arabica) on reclaimed land beside the pylon at Shibdon on 11th

. Birtley had Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) in flower on 10th. Yellow Corydalis (Pseudofumaria lutea) was in flower at Shibdon on 11th. and next day Greater Tussock Sedge (Carex paniculata), Great Plantain (Plantago major) and Cuckoo-flower (Cardamine pratensis) were at Maryside Hill. Wild Cherry (Prunus avium) was in flower at Hedley Hall woods. Water Forget-me-not (Myosotis scorpioides) was in flower at Shibdon on 13th. Bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta ) and Cow Parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) were noted the next day. Shibdon Pond produced Leopard's-bane ( Doronicum pardalianches) in flower on 17th. Bitter Vetch (Lathyrus linifolius), Bush Vetch (Vicia sepium ), Water Avens (Geum rivale) and Woodruff (Galium odoratum) were all in flower on 18th on the Derwent Walk and Broom (Cytisus scoparius subsp. scoparius), Black Horehound (Ballota nigra), Scentless Mayweed (Tripleurospermum inodorum) and Ivy-leaved Speedwell (Veronica hederifolia) in flower at Hedley Hall. Ravensworth Fell on the 19th yielded Sweet Cicely (Myrrhis odorata), Black Currant (Ribes nigrum) and Ribwort Plantain (Plantago lanceolata) in flower. Shibdon had Apple (Malus domestica), Oxeye Daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare), Field Pepperwort ( Lepidium campestre ) on the 19th and Ground-ivy (Glechoma hederacea) and Elder (Sambucus nigra) on the 20th.

Also on 20th in the Derwenthaugh area Crosswort (Cruciata laevipes) on banks, Common Storksbill (Erodium cicutarium ) and Bulbous Buttercup (Ranunculus bulbosus ) near Marina. Hedge Mustard (Sisymbrium officinale ) at Derwenthugh Railway Bridge. Wood Forget Me Not (Myosotis sylvatica), Wood Stitchwort (Stellaria nemorum) and Hairy Tare (Vicia hirsuta) on Derwent Walk. While the 21st produced Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) at Shibdon. The 26th produced Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus), Yorkshire-fog (Holcus lanatus), Meadow Foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis) and Perennial Wall-rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia) at Kibblesworth and in the Ryton to Shibdon area Lesser Pond-sedge (Carex acutiformis), Glaucous Sedge (Carex flacca), Greater Pond-sedge (Carex riparia), Apple (Malus domestica), Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna).

The 22nd had Field Pansy (Viola arvensis), Common Wintercress (Barbarea vulgaris ) and Dovesfoot Cranesbill (Geranium molle). The 23rd/24th produced Wild Pansy (Viola tricolor ) near Shibdon and Crown Vetch (Securigera varia) at Ryton and Wych Elm (Ulmus glabra), Ivy-leaved Toadflax (Cymbalaria muralis), Snow-in-summer (Cerastium tomentosum), Smooth Sow-thistle (Sonchus oleraceus), Broad-leaved Dock (Rumex obtusifolius) and Adder's-tongue (Ophioglossum vulgatum ) near Birtley. Finally Anthoxanthum odoratum (Sweet Vernal-grass), Sanguisorba officinalis (Great Burnet) and Potentilla erecta (Tormentil) were noted on 30th.

Maidenhair Spleenwort [Peter Harvey] The Railway Bridge at Derwenthaugh had Asplenium trichomanes subsp.quadrivalens (Maidenhair Spleenwort) , Asplenium adiantum-nigrum (Black Spleenwort), and Hartstonue Fern (Phyllitis scolopendrium ) all growing there on the 4th. Elsewhere Cochlearia danica (Danish Scurvygrass) and Arabidopsis thaliana (Thale Cress) was found the previous day in flower. On the 6th Tripleurospermum maritimum (Sea Mayweed) was seen at Derwenthaugh Marina. Moschatel (Adoxa moschatellina ) was seen in flower on the 7th at Thornley Woods and Barren Strawberry there on 10th and Downy Birch (Betula pubescens). Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa) at Paddock on 13th, Bugloss ( Anchusa arvensis) was found on 16th. Brassica napus subsp. oleifera (Oil-seed Rape) noted on 17th at Shibdon and Carex caryophyllea (Spring-sedge) at Westfield also on 17th. The 20th produced Medicago lupulina (Black Medick) at Shibdon. Field Woodrush (Luzula campestris) in flower at Blaydon on 23rd.

February 2009 Groundsel (Senecio vulgaris), Alder (Alnus glutinosa), Common Daisy (Bellis perennis), Dandelion (Taraxacum aggregate) were seen in flower at Dunston on 8th and Marsh Marigold (Caltha palustris) at Clara Vale together with Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) on 9th. The 15th-17th produced Common Field-speedwell (Veronica persica), Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium), Lesser Celandine (Ranunculus ficaria), Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) - late this year, Common Chickweed (Stellaria media) - see below
and Hairy Bitter-cress (Cardamine hirsuta). Shibdon on the 19th produced Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara), Betula pendula (Silver Birch), Prunus spinosa (Blackthorn)

In flower on 21st were Primrose (Primula vulgaris) at Shibdon, Goat Willow (Salix caprea subsp. caprea ) at Lamesley and Hazel (Corylus avellana ) at Kibblesworth. By the 28th Common Whitlowgrass (Erophila verna), Shepherd's-purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) and Opposite-leaved Golden-saxifrage (Chrysosplenium oppositifolium) was recorded. January 2009
