2007 Notable Records and first flowers

August 2007

A single Cotton Thistle was in flower at Sandy Bank road, Blaydon and Canadian Fleabane just outside Blaydon railway station. Purple Loosestrife at Birtley sewage works on 13th. Broad-leaved Helleborine at Shibdon - several plants noted for the first time after hawthorn scrub clearance two years ago. Also noted at Ravensworth during the month.

July 2007

Great Willow-herb at Shibdon [George Simpson]

Common Valerian, Ragged Robin, Great Willow-herb and Perforate St. John's Wort in flower at Shibdon on 2nd. Creeping Thistle noted on 3rd. On 4th/5th - Common Water Plantain, Spear Thistle and Perennial Sow-thistle were note.

The first Marsh Ragwort in flower appeared on the 8th at Shibdon On 13th Amphibious Bistort, Short-fruited Willow-herb, Lucerne, Early Golden-rod, Knot-grass, False Oat-grass (Arrhenatherum elatius), Creeping Soft-grass (Holcus mollis), Wild Oat (Avena fatua) and Buddleja davidii all in flower.

Old railway sidings between Lamesley and Birtley were checked on the on the 15th and the following plants were noteworthy. Pale Toadflax (Linaria repens), Large Bindweed (Calystegia sylvatica). Also Upright Hedge Parsley and Meadow Cranesbill were nearby in flower at the same time at the Birtley sewage works.

 

June 2007

Watercress and Lesser Stitchwort at Shibdon [George Simpson]

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare), Nipplewort (Lapsana communis), Soft Rush (Juncus effusus) and Common Orache (Atriplex patula) all noted in flower today as well as Germander Speedwell (Veronica chamaedrys) which has been overlooked, all on the 7th. On the 6th Flax (Linum usitatissimum) - a large patch was noted at Shibdon.

Quaking-grass (Briza media) noted near Blaydon Quarry on 2nd. On 3rd, Tragopogon pratensis (Goat's-beard), Pilosella aurantiaca (Fox and Cubs), Silene vulgaris (Bladder Campion), Senecio viscosus (Sticky Groundsel), Vicia cracca (Tufted Vetch), Calystegia sepium (Hedge Bindweed), Diplotaxis tenuifolia (Wall Rocket), Symphytum x uplandicum (Russian Comfrey), Solanum dulcamara (Bittersweet) and Elytrigia repens (Common Couch) were all found in flower between Timber beach and Costco on 3rd when Impatiens glandulifera (Indian Balsam), Carduus nutans (Musk Thistle) and Potamogeton natans (Broad-leaved Pondweed) were noted at Lamesley. Meadow Pea (Lathyrus pratensis) and Common Knapweed (Centaurea nigra) were in flower at Shibdon on 4th. Bee Orchid was in flower there the next day and Broad-leaved Willow-herb (E. montanum) there on 8th.

On 17th/18th - White Melilot at Stargate, Smith's Pepperwort at Westfield and Hedge Woundwort, Marsh Yellow-cress and Common Toadflax at Shibdon. Also a small colony of Bee Orchid discovered at Stargate. On 20th/21st - Tall Melilot, Greater Plantain, Rose-bay Willow-herb and Common Centuary noted. Another 14 Bee Orchid plants found at Shibdon on 22nd and Hemlock noted in flower near Blaydon on the 23rd. Hoary Plantain at Shibdon on 24th.Viper's Bugloss and Rough Poppy seen in the Blaydon area the next day. On the 26th a third colony of Bee Orchid discovered, together with Brown Sedge. Adder's-tongue Fern noted in excellent quantities at the Guards. Creeping Cinquefoil at Blaydon the same day.

May 2007

Lesser Pond-sedge (Carex acutiformis), Glaucous Sedge (Carex flacca), Tormentil (Potentilla erecta), Field Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) and Hairy Tare (Vicia hirsuta) noted in flower. Shining Cranesbill (Geranium lucidum) was found at Stargate on the 2nd, this is a second site for the species in the borough which may be expanding.The 4th produced Fen Bedstraw (Galium uliginosum) in flower at Westfield and next day Shibdon had Yellow-rattle (Rhinanthus minor). Curled Dock (Rumex crispus) and Water Avens (Geum rivale) in flower. In the Derwent valley on the 6th - Bitter Vetch (Lathyrus linifolius), Sanicle (Sanicula europaea), Woodruff (Galium odoratum), Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), Wood Dock (Rumex sanguineus), Herb Bennet (Geum urbanum), Pignut (Conopodium majus) and Hard Fern (Blechnum spicant) were noted and along the Tyne in the Derwenthaugh area - Goosegrass (Galium aparine), with Dove's-foot Crane's-bill (Geranium molle) at nearby Shibdon.

The river at Derwenthaugh produced Black Italian Poplar (Populus x canadensis 'Serotina'), Japanese Rose (Rosa rugosa), Laurustinus (Viburnum tinus), Common Scurvygrass (Cochlearia officinalis) and one smaller, erect plant nearby but on the pavement instead of the shore that keyed out as Pyrenean Scurvygrass (Cochlearia pyrenaica). Rapsberry noted on 7th.

At a brownfield site by Costco, as well as more Common Pennycress, Squirrel-tail Fescue (Vulpia bromoides) and False Fox Sedge (Carex otrubae) was seen. Shibdon Pond held Bittersweet, Raspberry, Water Forget-me-not (Myosotis scorpioides) , Dog Rose (Rosa canina), Leopard's-bane (Doronicum pardalianches), Barren Brome (Anisantha sterilis ) and White Campion (Silene latifolia). Viburnum opulus (Guelder-rose) in flower here on 12th.

Kidney Vetch at Stargate, Yorkshire Fog, Snowberry, Sweet Vernal grass, Marsh Horsetail, Hairy Sedge, at Shibdon, Heath Groundsel (Senecio sylvaticus), Creeping Buttercup, Wood Speedwell, Cut-leaved Cranesbill, Pedunculate Oak, Aspen, Self Heal, Stinging Nettle, Japanese Knotweed, Soft Brome, Corsican Pine, a 'late' Early Dog-Violet (Viola reichenbachiana) all at Bradley Fell and Common Water Crowfoot at Bradley Hall Pond.

And the following ferns, Male Fern, Broad Bucker Fern, Bracken and Lady Fern all noted at Bradley Fell.
Timothy noted the following day. Soft Brome and Bramble (Rubus fruticosus) at Shibdon on 17th. On 20th Wood False-brome (Brachypodium sylvaticum) , Rough-stalked Meadow-grass, Common Vetch, Rhododendron, Celery-leaved Buttercup and Swedish Whitebeam were noted in flower. At Stargate on the same date - Northern Marsh Orchid and Early Hair Grass, Silver Hair Grass and Squirrel-tailed Fescue all flowering on the same bank.
On 22nd/23rd - Eyebright, Crested Dogstail, Yellow Oat-grass and Marsh Thistle were found. Stargate and Blaydon Burn were checked on 27th and the following species in flower were added to this year's list - Rat-tailed Fescue, Fern-grass, Globe-flower, Rest-harrow, Bird's-foot, Field Madder, Marsh Valrain, Wild Radish, Common Sedge, Marsh Hawksbeard, Geranium pyrenaicum (Hedgerow Crane's-bill), Reflexed Stonecrop and Small Cudweed. Also on 27th, Changing Forget-me-Not, Common Red Poppy, Spiked and Oval Sedge were seen at Shibdon.
On 29th - Rumex conglomeratus (Clustered Dock), Eleocharis palustris (Common Spike-rush), Rorippa nasturtium-aquaticum (Water Cress), Equisetum fluviatile (Water Horsetail) and Potentilla anserina (Silverweed) were at Shibdon. Ceratocapnos claviculata (Climbing Corydalis), Lonicera periclymenum (Honeysuckle), Quercus cerris (Turkey Oak), Luzula sylvatica (Great Wood-rush), Equisetum sylvaticum (Wood Horsetail), Pteridium aquilinum (Bracken) and Deschampsia cespitosa (Tufted Hair-grass) at Chopwell. River Tyne at Redheugh held Artemisia absinthium (Wormwood) and Stargate Reseda luteola (Weld), Hypochaeris radicata (Common Catsear), Trifolium campestre (Hop Trefoil), Papaver pseudoorientale (Oriental Poppy), Alchemilla mollis (Ladies Mantle), Juncus conglomeratus (Compact Rush) and Blackstonia perfoliata (Yellow-wort)

April 2007

Cut-leaved Deadnettle (Lamiun hybridum) noted, this is a rare species in Gateshead. Also noted was Moschatel (Adoxa moschatellina), Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa) and Wall Speedwell (Veronica arvensis). At Thornley, Wood Sorrel (Oxalis acetosella) on 6th when Field Pansy (Viola arvensis) was seen at Crawcrook Quarry. On 7th Oilseed Rape (Brassica napus) , Wild Cherry (Prunus avium), Garlic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata) and Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) was seen in flower. Shibdon Pond produced a few plants of Slender Speedwell (Veronica filiformis) where there was masses a few years ago. Also Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) and Common Dog Violet (Viola riviniana) in flower here making the list 80. Little Mouse-ear (Cerastium semidecandrum) found at Stargate on 9th. Also on the 9th - Hairy Wood-rush, Green Alkanet, Cherry Laurel, Gooseberry, Large Bittercress, Wavy Bittercress, Wild Strawberry and escaped Forsythia were all noted in flower. The next day, another 4 were noted Sea Buckthorn, Sticky Mouse-ear, Honesty (Lunaria annua) and Ribwort Plantain.

Between the 11th and 13th, the warm weather brought out a lot more flowers - namely - Great Woodrush, Ground-Ivy, Sweet Cicely, Ivy-leaved Speedwell, Ash, Holly, Scot's Pine, Biting Stonecrop (Sedum acre) , Aubretia (Aubrieta deltoidea), Darwin's Barberry (Berberis darwinii ), Hybrid Bluebell (Hyacinthoides x massartiana), Wood Forgetmenot, Greater Periwinkle (Vinca major), Cultivated Tulip (Tulipa gesneriana), Red Campion and Apple (Malus domestica). Making the list now standing at 110. Cuckoo-flower, Crosswort (Cruciata laevipes), Redcurrant (Ribes rubrum), Osier (Salix viminalis ), White Willow (Salix alba), Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis) and Dutch Rush (Equisetum hyemale) in flower on 14th.

On 15th Meadow Foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis) at Lamesley and Flowering Currant (Ribes sanguineum) at Byermoor were added to the list.

Hawthorn was in flower at Shibdon Pond on 16th, Cow Parsley and White Stonecrop (Sedum album) on 17th, Elder, Meadow Buttercup, and Field Pepperwort (Lepidium campestre) both at Shibdon on 18th. The 20th produced Black Medick (Medicago lupulina), Red Clover (Trifolium pratense) and Common Bent (Agrostis capillaris). The 22nd produced Perennial Wall Rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia) and Creeping Bent (Agrostis stolonifera) in flower by the Redheugh bridge. Bird Cherry, Horse Chestnut, Wych Elm and Hedge Mustard found the next day in the Birtley area. On 24th, Common Corn-salad (Valerianella locusta) was in flower at Clara Vale and Greater Tussock-sedge (Carex paniculata) at nearby Maryside Hill and Rowan at Shibdon. At the latter the next day Bird's-foot Trefoil and Bush Vetch were noted.

Thyme-leaved Speedwell (Veronica serpyllifolia), Goldilocks Buttercup (Ranunculus auricomus), Bay Willow (Salix pentandra), Narrow-leaved Vetch (Vicia sativa subsp. nigra), Herb-Robert (Geranium robertianum), Common Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) and Black Spleenwort (Asplenium adiantum-nigrum) were all in flower for the first time on the 27th. Ox-eye Daisy was noted on the 28th.

On the 29th at number of non-woodland sites were checked and the following were noted Blackcurrant, Beech, Lilac, Hogweed, Bugle, Sessile Oak, Bulbous Buttercup, Field Maple, Smooth Meadow-grass, Wild Mignonette, Hornbeam, Red Fescue, Red Horse Chestnut, White Poplar, Hoary Cress (Lepidium draba), Broad-leaved Dock, the true Spanish Bluebell (Hyacinthoides hispanica) at Lamesley Water Meadows, Common Sorrel, Yellow flag, Prickly Sow-thistle and both Siberian Squill (Scilla siberica) and Thyme-leaved Sandwort (Arenaria serpyllifolia) at Timber Beach. Bluebell and Wild Allium also recorded. 170 species in flower for the year so far.

March 2007 On the 2nd, a field near Birtley yielded both Red Dead-nettle (Lamium purpureum) and Broom (Cytisus scoparius). The next day Thale Cress (Arabidopsis thaliana) and Field Penny-cress (Thlaspi arvense) were found in flower at Westfield making the list of species in flower now 51. Spring Crocus (Crocus vernus) and Daffodil (Narcissus pseudonarcissus subsp. major) both growing and well established below Winlaton on 4th. A few days later, on the 7th, Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) and Common Mouse-ear (Cerastium fontanum) were both recorded making the year list 55. Early Scurvy-grass (Cochlearia danica) in flower on the A1 on 9th. On 11th, Lamesley produced White Dead-nettle (Lamium album) and Yew (Taxus baccata) flowering with Swede (Brassica napus subsp. rapifera) on the roadside nearby at Pennyfine Road. Pineapple-weed (Chamomilla suaveolens) in flower by the A1 on 12th making 60 for the year. Greater Stitchwort (Stellaria holostea) was found in flower at Marley Hill on the 13th and the next day Field Wood-rush (Luzula campestris) and Barren Strawberry (Potentilla sterilis) were in flower at Westfield Pasture. The hybrid Black Poplar (Populus x canadensis 'Robusta' ) was noted in flower at Lamesley on 25th. On 29th Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) at Shibdon was noted in flower for the first time this year, making 66 so far.

February 2007Paddock Hill produced two new flowering plants on the 3rd, namely Dog's Mercury (Mercurialis perennis) and Lesser Celandine (Ranunculus ficaria) and Lesser Periwinkle (Vinca minor) was seen near Tanfield railway the same day making the list now 37. Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenemium) was seen in flower in the snow on the 7th. On the 8th Common Whitlow-grass (Erophila verna) was recorded, followed by the 13th by Tripleurospermum inodorum (Scentless Mayweed), Grey Alder (Alnus incana) and Alsike Clover (Trifolium hybridum). 'Pussy' Willow - both Grey Willow (Salix cinerea subsp. oleifolia) and Goat Willow (Salix caprea) catkins seen today making the list now at 44. Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) was noted on the 17th at Beda Hills. Many bushes of Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) were in flower at Springwell on 24th Primrose was in flower on 25th at Crawcrook Quarry.

January 2007Eleven species of plant were in flower on 1st January i.e. Marsh Marigold, Smooth Sow-thistle, Groundsel, Oxford Ragwort, Common Daisy, Dandelion, Hazel, Downy Birch, Alder, Gorse and Musk Mallow.

Also in flower the first week were Silver Birch, Lesser Spearwort, Common Chickweed, Petty Spurge and Hairy Bitter-cress, 3 grasses were noted with fully formed flowers - Annual Meadow-grass, Wall Barley and Cock's-foot Grass bringing the list up to 19. On 13th - Winter Heliotrope (Petasites fragrans) was in flower at Stella churchyard and Ivy-leaved Toadflax was seen the following day at Timber beach with Smooth Hawks-beard at Stargate on 15th making 22 by mid-month. The first Snowdrops in a semi-wild position were reported from several sites by the 18th. On 21st, the first Cherry Plum (Prunus cerasifera ) in flower.

Towards the end of the month, Opposite-leaved Golden Saxifrage (Chrysosplenium oppositifolium) was in flower at Clara Vale on 27th. The following day both Wild Turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa) and Common Winter-cress (Barbarea vulgaris) were found in flower at Birtley reedbeds. A quick search nearby found the following arable weeds in flower - Field Forget-me-not (Myosotis arvensis), Common Bugloss (Anchusa arvensis), Common Fumitory (Fumaria officinalis subsp. officinalis), Common Field Speedwell (Veronica persica) and Common Ragwort (Senecio jacobaea) with several flowers and buds showing making the total for the year now at 32. Stargate produced the first Cowslip (Primula veris), with one in flower on the very top of a small hill on the 29th and some Shepherd's-purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) had presumably been missed earlier.
