Single Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, Tuesday 29th September 2009 Derwenthaugh - Green Woodpecker digging up ant's nest on the field next to the Derwent also Kestrel . Monday 28th September 2009 Lamesley water meadows - 2 Green Sandpiper Shibdon Pond - 4 Water Rail on the mud today, together with 160+ Redshank, 200 Teal and 50 Lapwing Cowen Road, Blaydon - Also a 1st year male Blackbird crashed into the glass door. Sunday 27th September 2009 Thornley WC - Jay 2, Coal Tits 10+, Blue Tits 6+, Nuthatch 3, Wren 1, Magpie 3, Red Kite 2, Woodpigeon 6, Robin 4, Sparrowhawk 1, Carrion Crow 2, Dunnock 2, Gt Tit 5, Chaffinch 10+, Great Spotted woodpecker 1, Chiffchaff 1, Blackbird 2.   Juvenile Wren at Thornley [Ray Wilby]     Lamesley water meadows - 1 Green Sandpiper and a Jay Friday 18th to Saturday 26th September 2009 Burdon Moor - A Stonechat seen on 18th. Cowen Road, Blaydon - Chiffchaff still present in the garden on 18th-24th with a Willow Warbler there again on 22nd. A possible Osprey flew over on 22nd. A dead Short-tailed Field Vole found on 26th. Dunston - 38 Golden Plover on the Tyne Shibdon Pond- Water level currently very low with regular counts of roosting Redshank of 120+ and 3 Water Rails seen most days. Willow Warbler , Bullfinch , Long tailed tit and Goldfinch in the reserve on 20th and on the 26th, Redshank 40+, Teal 200+, Lapwing 100+, Moorhen 30+, Mallard 50+, Black headed Gull 50+, Herring Gull 50+, Coots 40+, Grey Heron 1, Woodpigeon 10+, Magpie 4, Wren 1. Derwenthaugh - 3 Golden Plover and 1 Dunlin in among a flock of Lapwings. Red Admiral and Migrant Hawker also seen on 19th. 7 Goosander flew up the Tyne the next day. Thornley WC - Small flock of Long Tail Tits, Nuthatch, Magpie, Blackbird, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Wren, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Pheasant, Chaffinch Thursday 17th September 2009 Birtley reedbed pools - 1 Chiffchaff singing Thornley WC - A Common Buzzard performed very well. Also Blackbird 1, Coal Tit 20+ , Chaffiknch 15+, Blue Tit 10+, Nuthatch 3, Great Spotted Woodpecker 1, Jay 2, Magpie 1, Robin 3, Bullfinch 1 (heard) Wren 1, Pheasant 1. Common Buzzard at Thornley [Ray Wilby]     Wednesday 16th September 2009 Thornley WC - 2 Chiffchaff, 2 Goldcrest and 1Tree Creeper Tuesday 15th September 2009 Cowen Road, Blaydon - Single Chiffchaff, two Willow Warbler and a Sparrowhawk Low Fell - Tawny Owl calling at 19:45hrs Sunday 13th September 2009 Burdon Moor - 15 Lesser Redpoll and 50 Golden Plover. Lamesley water meadows - 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Common Buzzard, 100 Goldfinch, 3 Stock Dove, 7 Lesser Black-backed Gull and 3 Kestrel with a Greenshank on the pool between the Coalhouse roundabout and Lamelsey Church and 21 Snipe, 2 Sand Martin, 7 Swallow and 12 House Martin . 4 Common Buzzard were viewable from here looking towards the Ravensworth Estate. Birtley reedbed pools - 3 Chiffchaff and a Common Buzzard. Kibblesworth brickworks pools - A Sparrowhawk Saturday 12th September 2009 Timber Beach - 104 Golden Plover Shibdon Pond -18 Shoveler and 2 Migrant Hawker Axwell Park - a Tawny Owl. Friday 11th September 2009 Lamesley Water Meadows - 1 Greenshank and 1 Green Sandpiper. Also a Wigeon seen. Cowen Road, Blaydon - Single Willow Warbler - probably a different individual from yesterday Derwenthaugh Meadows - Curlew, Snipe and Redshank Birtley - 2 Tawny Owl. Thursday 10th September 2009 Crawcrook Quarry - 5 Common Buzard overhead. Timber Beach - 50 Golden Plover Cowen Road, Blaydon - Single Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff continuing to feed up in a garden there Shibdon Pond - 2 Willow Warbler Derwenthaugh Meadows - 1 Redshank Wednesday 9th September 2009 Cowen Road, Blaydon -Single House Martin Far Pasture NR - Swallows x 7, Kingfisher x1, Red Kite, Heron, Snipe x 1, Jay x2 Lamesley Water Meadows - 3 Greenshank one had a close call with a sparrowhawk but managed to get away, 1 Green Sandpiper, Grey Heron, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Common Buzzard over the woods towards Angel of the North, 30+ Greylags, and a few juvenille Lesser Black-backed Gull Derwenthaugh Meadows - Common Snipe , Curlew and Redshank Dewenthaugh Marina - 60+ Redshank roosting on Derwenthaugh Staithes with a Green Sandpiper on the river Derwent, 2 Grey Wagtails   Tuesday 8th September 2009 Cowen Road, Blaydon -Chiffchaff still calling and a Swift flew over as well as about 12 Hirundines. Birtley - About 20 Swallow flew south Sunday 6th September 2009 Shibdon Pond- 1 Wigeon,1 Gadwall, 26 Shoveler, 141 Teal and a Kingfisher Thornley - 1 Swift flew over. Lamesley Water Meadows - 1 Greenshank and 2 Kingfisher Westfield Pasture - 1 Spotted Flycatcher still, plus Common Whitethroat and Blackcap. Stella- 300 Lapwing. Saturday 5th September 2009 Westfield Pasture - 1 Spotted Flycatcher Lamesley Water Meadows - 1 Greenshank, 2 Green Sandpiper and a Kingfisher with 2 Greenshank and a Dunlin on the pool between the Coalhouse roundabout and Lamesley Church. Friday 4th September 2009 Shibdon Pond- The Juvenile Mute Swans took their first flight. 1 Gadwall, 20+ Shoveler, 1-2 Water Rail and a Kingfisher also seen. Derwenthaugh - 2 Kingfishers on the river Derwent. Lamesley Water Meadows - 1 Greenshank Sled Lane Pond - 7.30pm - 1 Swift flying with large group of Swallows & House Martins, several Mistle Thrush, single Grey Heron, Teal and Wigeon, 4 Tufted Duck, 2ad 2juv Mute Swan plus numerous Mallard, Moorhen and Coot. Shibdon Pond - 1 Kingfisher, 1 Gadwall and 9 Shoveler. Also 3 Migrant Hawker. 1 Southern Hawker and a Common Darter
Lamesley Water Meadows - 2 Kingfisher, 22 Common Snipe , 2 Greenshank and 2 Green Sandpiper with a Common Sandpiper and a Common Buzzard on the pool between the Coalhouse roundabout and Lamelsey Church.
Burdon Moor - 30 Golden Plover (Northern ssp.) 5 Wheatear and 2 Common Whitethroat.
Derwenthaugh Meadows - 3 Curlew and 2 Common Snipe
Timber Beach - 5 Golden Plover, 1 Ringed Plover and a Common Seal

Saturday 29th August 2009

Derwenthaugh Meadows - 2 Wheatear, 2 Curlew and 2 Grey Heron.
Shibdon Pond - 1 Wheatear, Kingfisher and 9 Shoveler
Westfield Pasture - 11 Spotted Flycatcher in the area, together with 26 Willow Warbler/Chiffchaff, 5 Blackcap and 6 Common Whitethroat.
Birtley - 1 Common Swift flew over.

Derwenthaugh Meadows - 5 Snipe
Shibdon Pond - Juvenile Sedge Warbler, Common Darter , Migrant Hawker at same spot as where there were Hawkers yesterday
Lamesley Water Meadows - 2 Green Sandpiper and 1 Greenshank

Greenshank at Lamesley An influx on the 9th produced 4 birds, all like this bird at Lamesley were birds of the year. [Paul Davidson]

Lamesley- 4 Greenshank and 1 Common Sandpiper on the pool between the Coalhouse roundabout and Lamelsey Church.
Clara Vale - A large female Goshawk flew over the village
Derwenthaugh Meadows - Several Snipe feeding this morning on the flashes furthest away from the road, with 100+Redshank on the river
Shibdon Pond - 3 Common Swift flew over.

Tuesday 25th August 2009

Lamesley Water Meadows - 2 Wood Sandpiper again present between 3.30pm and 4pm. Also 2 Greenshank, single Green & Common Sandpiper in the area between 3.00-3.30pm . A juvenile Sparrowhawk bathing in the main pool.
Thornley WC - Spotted Flycatcher 1, Chaffinch, 6+ Coal Tit 6+, Robin 3+, Dunnock 4, Magpie 2, Woodpigeon 8+, Great Tit 4, Blue Tit 6 +.

Shibdon Pond - 7-9 Gadwall, 2 Shoveler, Grey Wagtail, 3 Common Swift and a Kingfisher seen.

Monday 24th August 2009

Lamesley Water Meadows - 3 Greenshank and 2 Green Sandpiper but no sign of the Wood Sandpipers. A 4th Greenshank again on the nearby pool between the Coalhouse roundabout and Lamesley Church. Also 6 Common Snipe and a Swift
Clara Vale - A Green Sandpiper flew west.

Sunday 23rd August 2009

Lamesley Water Meadows - 2 Wood Sandpiper (both juveniles), 3 Greenshank, 1 Green Sandpiper and 5 Tree Sparrow. A 4th Greenshank and a Common Sandpiper and 13 Pied Wagtail nearby on the pool between the Coalhouse roundabout and Lamesley Church

Thornley Woodland Centre - A male Redstart and a Spotted Flycatcher

Male Redstart at Thornley This bird, together with the Spotted Flycatcher on the 23rd, made it the best day at Thornley for some time. Present at 12:20 hrs only. [Joanne Reavey]

Thornley Woodland Centre - 2 Purple Hairstreak from the carpark. Also Bullfinch 2, Great Spotted Woodpecker 2, Chaffinch 10+, Robin 3, Nuthatch 4, Woodpigeon 10+, Blackbird 2, Dunnock 2, Blue Tit 10+, Wren 2, Magpie 2, Stock Dove 2.
Rowlands Gill - A Common Buzzard flew over.

Green Woodpecker at Stargate This is an excellent spot for this species, a pair here raised 3 young this year with several other pairs within yaffling distance also sucessful. [Ron McHatton]

Kibblesworth Common - 4 Common Snipe but no sign of any Greenshank today.
Lamesley Water Meadows - 1 Green Sandpiper. 200 Goldfinch at the nearby Church Pool and a Common Snipe.
Near Springwell - 1 Common Swift
Derwenthaugh meadows - 20+ Pied Wagtails most of them juvenile’s feeding and fighting plus 2 Willow Warbler.
Stella/Stargate - 2+ Green Woodpecker including a juvenile.

Bradley Fell - A probable Emperor seen several times. breeding bird summary .... Grasshopper Warblers reeling from several spots, regular Willow Tit including juveniles, numerous singing Yellowhammer & Common Whitethroat, Reed Bunting singing & confirmed breeding Lesser Whitethroat.
Derwenthaugh Marina - 2 young Willow Warblers feeding in the tops of the trees and a Lesser Redpoll feeding fledged young.

Friday 7th August 2009

Teams- 1 Ring Necked Parakeet at Keelman’s Way, Teams this morning at 9.00am. Calling repeatedly before flying over to Newcastle near Arena area.
Cowen Road, Blaydon - One observer was going to pull some weed seedheads from the abandoned hanging basket at his front door but thought...something might want them...and today at 1pm was rewarded with a pair of Bullfinch and at 4pm, a few feet away, a Chiffchaff. Worthy weeds.
