Saturday 23rd September

Timber Beach - LEACH'S PETREL - flew up river toward Blaydon in mist this morning at 08:30. The observer said 'It was seen flying directly over the Tyne at low water. I say it was defiantly a Leach's and not a Storm based on its size around 8 inches - its flight easily changing speed and direction - it almost appeared to be enjoying outflying the Gulls - it also appeared to have a very ragged forked tail - more pointed wings and dull white rump - (at first sight it looked like a fat swift) - but it was the reaction of the gulls that drew our attention to it!) it flew very close to the water and finally outwitted the Gulls and flew up river toward Blaydon - it was very misty this morning and I know these birds only come ashore due to storms at sea but I honestly have to say 100% that is what I saw'. [Leach's Petrel Oceanodroma leucorhoa - Historical records only.- There are four records for the area spanning a period between 1830 and 1949. The first was a bird killed on the Tyne opposite the Old Mansion House, Newcastle in 1830. Some years later, on 1st March 1886 one was shot near Blaydon, though the specimen was not found until the 10th. This century there have been two other birds, both shot, on the Tyne. One was taken below Bensham Boathouse in November 1928, and finally one was at Ryton Willows on 24th April 1949. Considering that none of these birds were documented as occurring in storm conditions this cluster of records along the Tyne over a long time period would seem to be suggestive of some regular movement across country from Irish Sea to North Sea via the Tyne Valley.]
