Starling at Clara Vale

No Waxwings here despite 400 just over the border in Northumberland at Wylam but Starlings such as this one can look just as good.

Near Swalwell - A Barn Owl flew across a main road this evening in the snow.
Shibdon Pond
- 2 Woodcock , Water Rail , Redwing , Goldfinch and still many Blackbirds. Also a possible small crake was seen this morning running into cover
Winlaton - 30 House +Sparrows feeding in one garden
Birtley - 20 Waxwing in the town centre.

Birtley - A Reed Bunting returned to a garden for the first time since April
Clara Vale LNR - The usual birds at the feeding station plus 4 Yellow hammer and the Water Rail still showing well. Very few Greenfinch.

Greenside - A large falcon, presumabaly a falconer's escape was sitting on a chimney and thought to be Gyr x Peregrine hybrid. A Common Buzzard still present in the area and a flock of 150 Pink-fotted Goose flew SE.

Monday 22nd November 2010

Shibdon Pond - In the reserve Redwing , Bullfinch ,Goldfinch Reed Bunting , Long tailed Tits , Wrens ,Jays and what seems like a big influx of Blackbirds. There are 2 Cormorants with rings on both look freshly rung as the BTO ring is very shiny one of them has a green and white “DARVIC”
Derwenthaugh Meadows - 50 + Curlew
Derwent valley - A line of 12 Whooper Swans flew south along the western rim of the valley early afternoon.

Lamesley Water Meadows - 50 Teal
Derwent Walk CP - A mixed flock of about 70 birds including: 30 Goldcrest, Blue, Great and Long tailed Tits and Treecreeper.
Whickham - Report of a Barn Owl hunting fairly regularly.
Shibdon Pond - Shelduck , Shoveller , Redshank , Lapwing , Snipe. On the island a Cormorant with  a Green ring.
Bradley Fell - 4 Grey Partridge, 100+ Fieldfare and a Redwing
Rowands Gill - 5 Siskin in one garden and a Treecreeper, scaling the gable wall of a neighbours house.

Saturday 20th November 2010

Thornley WC -Blackbird, Magpie, Crow, 2 Red Kite (overhead) 2 Common Buzzard (overhead), 2 Brambling, Coal, Blue & Great Tits, Robin, Wren, Chaffinch, Nuthatch, Great spotted Woodpecker, Woodpigeon, Stock Dove, Dunnock and Roe Deer

Dunston - 12 Waxwings on Ravensworth Road opposite Wallace house just along from the rocket tower block in Dunston - at midday for 10 minutes whilst they spent their time catching flies!
Rowlands Gill - A Brambling (f), a Tree Sparrow and a Great spotted Woodpecker
all visited one garden.

Paddock Hill Wood, Derwent Walk CP - Goshawk over the wood this morning. Soared up high and drifted W towards Blaydon Burn. Flocks of Siskin, Long-tailed Tits and Bullfinch in Alders and Birches in lower Derwent Valley upstream of Swalwell.
Shibdon Pond -In the reserve Redwing , Jay , Bullfinch, Long Tailed Tits , Sparrowhawk and Kestrel. On the pond 3 Common Shelduck, Snipe, Redshank and 2 Common Gull.

Lamesley Water Meadows -  60 Lapwing, 20 Teal, 4 Moorhen, 50 Black-headed Gull, 6 Herring Gull with the nearby car park of the Ravensworth Arms, having 20 Mistle Thrush, 8 Fieldfare, 2 Redwing and a Song Thrush.

Shibdon Pond - Redwing , Great Spotted Woodpecker , LongTailed Tits , Greenfinch , Bullfinch , Wren , Kestrel in the reserve, Common Snipe , Teal and a Common Gull on the pond.

Water Rail still showing well at times. Grey Wagtail briefly dropped in on the right hand pond at 11.30am. 1 Long Tailed Tit and a Goldfinch feeding right beside the hide as the sun set

Low Fell - 40 to 60 Waxwings feeding in trees at bottom of Split Crow Road.
Shibdon Pond - In the reserve 17 Redwing , Bullfinch , Chaffinch , Greenfinch, Robins , Wrens and a couple of Mistle Thrush. Pond quiet today Shelduck , Kingfisher and Water Rail.

Stargate - 70 Waxwing in a garden
Lamesley Water Meadows - 100+ Blackheaded Gulls, 60 Greylag Geese, 20 Teal, 2 Redshanks, 6 Moorhens, 1 Canada Goose. 4 Tufted Ducks flew in from the south and landed in the among the reeds. 1 Curlew flew over and 6 Grey Partridge along Greenford Lane.
