Friday 30th November 2007

Rowlands Gill - A flock of about 25 Siskin in an observer's garden on the edge of the Derwent in Rowlands Gill about 9.30 this morning.
Bradley Fell old workings - Common Snipe, Green Woodpecker, Kestrel, Redwing, Siskin, Redpoll, Goldcrest, Yellowhammer, Bullfinch, Goldfinch, Long-tailed Tit, possible Reed Bunting. On or near garden feeders Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Nuthatch, 1-2 Willow Tit, Grey Squirrel. Tawny Owl showing well at dusk.

Derwenthaugh - Bar-tailed Godwit again today, where the Derwent joins the Tyne.

Shibdon Pond - 600+ Lapwing.
Cowen Road, Blaydon - 4 Redwing in one of the gardens there.
Clara Vale - 10+ Goosander and 7 Goldeneye on the river Tyne.

Long Bank, Birtley - A dead adult Peregrine Falcon found in the middle of the road coming out of Birtley towards Low Fell. It appeared to have flew into a vehicle ... a sad sight for such a wonderful bird. However it shows that the area of Long Bank is not without interest, 2 Common Buzzards in the same area in November three years ago.

Sled Lane Pond - Goosander 1, Goldeneye 1, Canada Goose 2, Tufted Duck 3, Wigeon 10, Mute Swans 4, Cormorant 1.

Clara Vale LNR - Goldfinch 1, Goldgrest 2, the usual numbers of Blue, Great and Coal Tits, Dunnock 4, Willow Tit 1, the partial albino Blackbird, Great Spotted Woodpecker 3, Kingfisher 1.

Stargate Quarry - Held a Mediterranean Gull, 2 Green Sandpiper, a Green Woodpecker and a Common Goldeneye
Shibdon Pond - 6 Dunlin in front of hide along with dozens of Redshank and Lapwings

Wednesday 21st November 2007

Derwenthaugh - About 30 Siskins feeding behind the Toyota garage. Also a Great Spotted Woodpecker there. About 50 Redwings came in late from the North and looked as though they were going to roost there.
Derwent Walk CP - The flock of Siskins by the Derwenthugh carpark has reached 120 now and on the river were 4 Dippers and a single Kingfisher.

Monday 19th November 2007

Derwent Walk CP - Flock of 30+ Siskins, single Willow Tit, Green Woodpecker and 2 drake Pochards still on Goodshields Lake... plus plenty of Red Kites.

Sunday 18th November 2007

River Tyne - Derwenthaugh to Dunston - No sign of Bar-tailed Godwit but 17 Dunlin, 36 Redshank, 600 Golden Plover, 450 Lapwing and 2 Curlew. Also 3 Little Grebe, 1 Goldeneye, 18 Mallard, 22 Teal and 5 Grey Heron on the river.
Shibdon Pond - 2 Water Rail heard in the marsh. 57 Redshank, 12 Shoveler and 3 Wigeon on the pond. 3, possibly 6 Brown Rat and a Grey Squirrel also present.
Ryton - Male Sparrowhawk present in a private garden.

Saturday 17th November 2007

Stella Park - Sparrowhawk and a Green Woodpecker heard.
Thornley Woodlands - A pair of Red Fox were together at first but one didn't hang around too long.

Friday 16th November 2007

Westfield Pasture - Fieldfare 100+, Redwing 30+, Ref Fox 1
Shibdon Pond - Good numbers of Greenfinch and Siskin on the 'tip' and 2 Bullfinch on the A1 embankment.

Westfield Pasture- Woodcock seen here this evening.
Clara Vale - 27 Fieldfare over this afternoon, first for this site this winter plus a flock of around 20 Siskin in reserve. The Willow Tit still coming to the feeders.

East Gateshead - Group of 13 Magpies in the east of the borough.

Ryton Golf Course - A Green Sandpiper on one of the small pools on the golf course.
Shibdon Pond - Green Woodpecker in the reserve today.

Clara Vale - A Green Sandpiper flew SE over the village early this morning.
Derwenthaugh - 2 Goosanders feeding on the river beside the weir and a small flock of linnets on the riverbank.
Birtley Sewage Works - Fieldfare 23, Mistle Thrush 3, Goldfinch 3, Kestrel 1
Kibblesworth - 9 Red-legged Partridge

Derwent Walk CP - At Clockburn Lake, 2 male pochards there, plus 10 Little Grebes (record count for this site?) and 6 Tufted Duck. 4 Dipper, another 4 Little Grebe and a Grey Wagtail on the river. Five Red Kite and a Sparrow-hawk also seen.

Shibdon Pond - Green Sandpiper spent 20 mins in fron of hide before flying off W 4 Shoveler

This species is becoming increasingly common in winter in Gateshead though this bird only stayed for 20 minutes before flying off W
