Burdon Moor - Male Manadrin again seen with a party of Crossbills seen flying over Ravensworth Grange. A late report of the same or another flock in the same general area 2 weeks ago. Single Northern Golden Plover. .

Burdon Moor - Male Manadrin, pair of Stonechat and singing Sedge Warbler.
Shibdon Pond - Dingy Skipper seen Birtley sewage Works - 5 or 6 singing Reed Warblers and the Green Woodpecker seen again.

Team Valley - Dingy Skippers and Banded Demoiselle were noted on a brownfield site by the Team at the former Norwood Coke Works. Shibdon Pond - 16 pair of Common Tern now sitting.

Shibdon Pond - 3+ Reed Warbler, 1 Sedge Warbler, 3 Common Whitethroat, 2 fledged broods of Long-tailed Tit and 9 pair of Common Tern

Lamesley - 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Chiffchaff, 3 Redshank, 1 Red-legged Partridge and a Lesser Black backed Gull ear
Ravensworth Grange - 1 Tree-creeper and a singing Chiffchaff.
Timber Beach - 1 Common Whitethroat. 22 Common Shelduck, 5 Redshank and 8 Common Tern between Dunston Staithes and Costco

Summary - A few new species for the year - Greenshank and Whimbrel, the latter over Clara Golf Course on 7th and a Wood Warbler at Thornley. Reed Warbler regularly singing at both Shibdon Pond and Lamesley reedbeds. Little Ringed Plover continuing to show at several spots in the Lamesley/Kibblesworth area. Wigeon remained throughout at Sled Lane.

Lamesley - 1 grey wagtail, 1 red-legged partridge, 4 greylags, 1 oystercatcher, 11 lapwing including 1 chick, 2 little ringed plovers,
Longacre Wood - A Garden warbler
Kibblesworth Brickworks Pond - kestrel apparently taking lapwing chick (definitely had something in talons, 2 adult lapwings went crazy mobbing it, especially when kestrel came back 20 minutes later for another go), 2 wheatears (both male), 1 curlew, 1 oystercatcher, 11 tufted duck, 2 mallard, 1 little grebe

Bank Holiday Monday 5th May 2008

Lamesley Water Meadows - 2 Black-tailed Godwit - morning only, chased off by Lapwings.
Hedley Hall Woods - Grasshopper Warbler.
Rough ground in Dunston/Metrocentre area - 2 pair of Little Ringled Plover, 1 pair of Oyster-catcher and a pair of Ringed Plover breeding. Also singing Gartden Warbler, Blackcap and Sedge Warbler.
Crawcrook Quarry - Lesser Whitethroat
Shibdon Pond -3 Reed Warbler and a Water Rail. An unconfirmed report of an Arctic Tern here. [The Black Terns departed about 17:00hrs yesterday]

Sunday 4th May 2008

Shibdon Pond - 4 Common Tern, 2 Sedge and 1 Reed Warbler. At lunchtime 3 Black Tern arrived (new for the year). Spotted Flycatcher (also new for the year) noted in the reserve

Birtley sewage works - 2 Garden Warbler, 4 Sedge Warbler, Blackcap, Common Whitethroat present

Derwenthaugh Meadows - Little Ringed Plover, Common Shelduck and Oyster-catcher with both Herring Gull and Lesser Black-backed Gulls nesting on the nearby factory roofs.

Friday 2nd May 2008

Birtley sewage works - Garden Warbler and Green Woodpecker still present and 2 Little Ringed Plover in the adjacent field.
Shibdon Pond - the first Common Terns have arrived back on the pond. Canada Goose with Goslings noted


Bradley Fell old workings - Garden Warbler this afternoon plus several Blackcap, Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff. Also Great Spotted Woodpecker nearby earlier.
Team valley Trading Estate - Grey Heron in the River on Team valley by First Avenue . Sparrowhawk hunting on the wasteground at the back of Royal Mails train platform also Chiffchaff singing in the same area . Four Mallards which seem to have taken up residence by the loading bays in Royal Mails distribution yard
