River Tyne at Costco- Ringed Plover but no sign of the Common Scoter.
Far Pasture NR - Greenfinches, 3 Goldfinches, 2 Whitethroats, 4 Reed Buntings, 2 Mute Swans and 2 Cygnets, 2 Red Kites, 1 Mistle Thrush, usual amount of tits, 2 Robins and a Dunnock

Thursday 29th June

River Tyne at Costco- Drake Common Scoter on the River Tyne
Blaydon Burn - Grasshopper Warbler reeling during the night
Shibdon Pond - Several Sedge Warblers singing again.

Ryton Willows - Green Woodpecker yaffling and calling Tawny Owl at dusk.

Wednesday 28th June

Clara Vale - Juvenile Tree Sparrow this evening on peanut feeder in a front garden.
Shibdon Pond - Common Terns breeding on the abandoned as well as the other rafts.
Westfield Pasture - Singing Grasshopper Warbler.
Stargate - Mute Swan pair with 5 cygnets, Common Tern, Sand Martins, Lesser Whitethroat, Linnets, Reed Buntings.

Tuesday 27th June

Willow Warbler at Far Pasture [Ray Wilby]

 

River Tyne between Costco and Timber beach - Small numbers of Redshank returning to mudflats, also large numbers of Lapwings gathering (70 +), 14 + Curlew's including young (up river toward Blaydon), 40 + Juvenile Black headed gulls as well as Herring and lesser black backed, several Common terns, a few Grey Herons and Cormorants and a few Shielduck with 9 young. Also a pair of Kestrels circling and using the large electricity pylon as a resting /hunting post.

Stargate - The Mute Swans here have 4 cygnets.

Common Whitethroat at Far Pasture

Another picture of the most popular pair of Whitethroats in the north-east.

Thornley / Far Pasture - 2 Red Kites, 1 Sparrow Hawk, 6 Robins, Numerous Sand Martins, Swallows and Swifts.2 Mute Swans with cygnets, 1 Mallard + young, 2 Coot, 1 Moorhen, 1 Heron, 1 Little Grebe and 1 chick, 2 m, 1f Reed Bunting, 1 Whitethroat, 8 Blue Tit, 1 (juvenile) Great Spotted Woodpecker, 6 young Great Tit, 1 (male) Bullfinch and 2 Magpies.

Thursday 15th June

Far Pasture NR - A pair Mute Swan and 2 cygnets, 5 reed buntings, 1 Grey Heron, 1 male Tufted duck, 1 Jay, 1 moorhen, 2 dabchicks, female Mallard and 7 ducklings, 1 Common Whitethroat.

River Derwent - Goosander breeding - An observer reports - a female goosander fell
out of a tree alongthe river. Ii am sure that it is nesting in one of the old ash trees along there.
I was walking along there and saw the bird fall out of the tree thinking it would be injuredI went and found it on the floor quite dazed as I went for a closer look it ran out of the grass and flew away over the field and up the river I presume.

Wednesday 14th June


Shibdon Pond - A CETTI'S WARBLER was reportedly heard by a visitor from Devon but no sign since despite many observers looking. Also another observer" Saw an osprey, just before dinner time, as I was traveling south bound on the A1, just before the Consett / Rowlands Gill exit. It flew from the Shibdon pond side to the Metrocentre side. I've been to Loch Garten many times, so I know my sighting is definitely 100%, even though i was shocked and nearly lost control of my car".

This is Gateshead's 4th Osprey of the year

Thornley feeding station - 2 Great Spotted woodpecker, Sparrowhawk chasing 1 of the woodpeckers Greenfinch and Yellowhammer.

Far Pasture NR - Sedge Warbler, a female-type Goldeneye, Little Grebe, 2 Tufted Duck, Little Grebe, Mute Swans with 4 cygnets Coot with 1 chick and a Mallards with 2 well grown juveniles.

Shibdon Pond - A pair of Teal on the pond with 2 Ruddy Duck. 2 Shelduck flushed from the marsh
Chopwell Woods - A Tree Pipit, seen with a bill food of food, presumably feeding chicks.

Saturday 10th June

Clara Vale - Tree Sparrows still being seen daily around the village.
Lockhaugh Farm Bank - An adult Hobby over the area of the Derwent Walk Country Park at tea time.

Wednesday 7th June


Kibblesworth - Common Bird Census revealed - 1 Oystercatcher, 1 Red Leg Partridge, 1 Garden Warbler, 1 Little Owl, 1 Marsh Tit (only 3rd record for site), House Martin (possibly breeding - if so first record) and 7 Common Whitethroat.

Kibblesworth Village - 1 Lesser Whitethroat

Late News - Female goosander with 8 newly hatched young on the river Derwent at Swalwell (near where the Derwent meets the Tyne) on the 30th May when a. Grey wagtail on the Derwent at Swalwell was collecting food.

Tuesday 6th June

Saltwell - Osprey over nr Saltwell Park
Bradley Fell - Cuckoo again in old workings area. Also excellent views of a ground feeding male Green Woodpecker plus Great Spotted Woodpecker nearby.

Monday 5th June

Stargate - 2 Sedge Warbler
Headley Hall Woods/Burdon Moor - 2 grasshopper warblers reeling 1 just west of the wildflower meadow and 1 on the path linking the car park to Burdon Moor. Also hundreds of juvenile starlings with adults collecting on the recently cut hay fields by Burdon Moor.
Bradley Fell -A large rufous hawk with a lot of white on the tail - possibly a Harris Hawk. Uncertain if it was an escaped bird or if some unseen person was flying it.

Sunday 4th June

Far Pasture - Cuckoo singing.
Ravensworth Fell - Spotted Flycatcher in oak wood
Bradley Fell - Cuckoo at the old workings E of the fell
Ryton GC - Green Woopecker
