Thornley Woodland Centre - 3 (2 male, 1 female) Brambling outside the centre, four more at the hide (2 male, 2 female) also a willow tit and 3 roe deer (1 Buck, 1 Doe and a Fawn.

Shibdon Pond - Single female Goldeneye

Monday 22nd December 2008

Blaydon - Single Waxwing flew over Blaydon Shopping Centre.
Shibdon Pond - 2 Goldeneye on the pond.

Sunday 21st December 2008

Lamesley Water Meadows -Kingfisher, Common Buzzard, 58 Teal, 250 Lapwing, 2 Common Shelduck and 6 Redshank
Shibdon Pond - Report of a Long-tailed Duck yesterday but no sign today. 7 Goldeneye present.
Blaydon - 19 Waxwing present by the Shell Garage near Blaydon Railway Station at 14:50hrs..

Lamesley Water Meadows -Male Peregrine again and Kingfisher.
Near Ryton - Barn Owl hunting at 15:30 hrs.

Lamesley Water Meadows -Male Peregrine again and Kingfisher. The latter just missed getting hit by a car as it flew onto the meadows from the stream by the Ravensworth Arms.
Birtley reedbeds -2 Fieldfare, 2 Common Shelduck and a Tufted Duck.

Clara Vale - Several small groups of Redwing and Fieldfares flew over
Lamesley Water Meadows -Male Peregrine, and a Wigeon. Kingfisher seen on the stream by the RavensworthArms and later on the water meadows.

Whickham - A Weasel at lunch time today just outside Whickham School gates, entertaining the smokers.
Clara Vale LNR - 9 Siskin amongst the more usual birds.

Saturday 13th December 2008

Lintzford - Observers got a surprise at 23:30hrs. A security light was triggered at the back of their house and they expected to see the neighbour's cat which is the usual culprit apart from the occasional Red Fox. However, this time it was an Otter! It peered into the garden pond but it was obviously unimpressed by the lack of fish! It then climbed over the rockery and disappeared.

LamesleyWater Meadows - No sign of any raptors today

Wednesday 10th December 2008

LamesleyWater Meadows - Male Peregrine and the juvenile Common Buzzard both seen again together with the large falcon originally thought to have been a female Peregrine but now thought to be a hybrid. This latter, large brown falcon, not much smaller than a Buzzard, descriped as both longer tailed and longer winged than Peregrine with just a small moustachal stripe, was seen feeding on a dead Grey Lag Goose in a nearby field, as was the Common Buzzard earlier. Later all three raptors were in the air together over the meadows. 6 Red-legged Partridge seen nearby.
Birtley Reedbed Pools - 2 Common Shelduck and 6 Fieldfare.

Derwenthaugh Staithes - 12 Teal, 4 Curlew
River Derwent by B&Q - 1 Goosander (female) , 6-Long tailed Tit and a Sparrowhawk was seen nearby
River Tyne at Costco - 40 Teal and 2 Mute Swan on the river upstream of there.
