Shibdon Pond- A Goshawk, thought to be an immature female flushed virtually everything as it flew through.
Lamesley Water Meadows - 1 Greenshank
Westfield Pasture - 3-4 Spotted Flyctcher and 2 Blackcap still present.

Sunday 30th August 2009

Shibdon Pond - 1 Kingfisher, 1 Gadwall and 9 Shoveler. Also 3 Migrant Hawker. 1 Southern Hawker and a Common Darter
Lamesley Water Meadows - 2 Kingfisher, 22 Common Snipe , 2 Greenshank and 2 Green Sandpiper with a Common Sandpiper and a Common Buzzard on the pool between the Coalhouse roundabout and Lamelsey Church.
Burdon Moor - 30 Golden Plover (Northern ssp.) 5 Wheatear and 2 Common Whitethroat.
Derwenthaugh Meadows
- 3 Curlew and 2 Common Snipe
Timber Beach - 5 Golden Plover, 1 Ringed Plover and a Common Seal

Saturday 29th August 2009

Derwenthaugh Meadows - 2 Wheatear, 2 Curlew and 2 Grey Heron.
Shibdon Pond - 1 Wheatear, Kingfisher and 9 Shoveler
Westfield Pasture - 11 Spotted Flycatcher in the area, together with 26 Willow Warbler/Chiffchaff, 5 Blackcap and 6 Common Whitethroat.
Birtley - 1 Common Swift flew over.

Friday 28th August 2009

Derwenthaugh Meadows - 5 Snipe
Shibdon Pond - Juvenile Sedge Warbler, Common Darter , Migrant Hawker at same spot as where there were Hawkers yesterday
Lamesley Water Meadows - 2 Green Sandpiper and 1 Greenshank

An influx on the 9th produced 4 birds, all like this bird at Lamesley were birds of the year.

Thursday 27th August 2009

Lamesley- 4 Greenshank and 1 Common Sandpiper on the pool between the Coalhouse roundabout and Lamelsey Church.
Clara Vale - A large female Goshawk flew over the village
Derwenthaugh Meadows - Several Snipe feeding this morning on the flashes furthest away from the road, with 100+Redshank on the river
Shibdon Pond - 3 Common Swift flew over.

Tuesday 25th August 2009

Lamesley Water Meadows - 2 Wood Sandpiper again present between 3.30pm and 4pm. Also 2 Greenshank, single Green & Common Sandpiper in the area between 3.00-3.30pm . A juvenile Sparrowhawk bathing in the main pool.
Thornley WC - Spotted Flycatcher 1, Chaffinch, 6+ Coal Tit 6+, Robin 3+, Dunnock 4, Magpie 2, Woodpigeon 8+, Great Tit 4, Blue Tit 6 +.

Monday 24th August 2009

Lamesley Water Meadows - 3 Greenshank and 2 Green Sandpiper but no sign of the Wood Sandpipers. A 4th Greenshank again on the nearby pool between the Coalhouse roundabout and Lamesley Church. Also 6 Common Snipe and a Swift
Clara Vale - A Green Sandpiper flew west.

Sunday 23rd August 2009

Lamesley Water Meadows - 2 Wood Sandpiper (both juveniles), 3 Greenshank, 1 Green Sandpiper and 5 Tree Sparrow. A 4th Greenshank and a Common Sandpiper and 13 Pied Wagtail nearby on the pool between the Coalhouse roundabout and Lamesley Church

Thornley Woodland Centre - A male Redstart and a Spotted Flycatcher

Male Redstart at Thornley

This bird, together with the Spotted Flycatcher on the 23rd, made it the best day at Thornley for some time. Present at 12:20 hrs only.

Thornley Woodland Centre - 2 Purple Hairstreak from the carpark. Also Bullfinch 2, Great Spotted Woodpecker 2, Chaffinch 10+, Robin 3, Nuthatch 4, Woodpigeon 10+, Blackbird 2, Dunnock 2, Blue Tit 10+, Wren 2, Magpie 2, Stock Dove 2.
Rowlands Gill - A Common Buzzard flew over.

This is an excellent spot for this species, a pair here raised 3 young this year with several other pairs within yaffling distance also sucessful.

Kibblesworth Common - 2 Greenshank and 2 Green Sandpiper
Cowen Road, Blaydon - Willow Warbler
Far Pasture NR -Numerous hirundines,a juvenile Kestrel and up to 5 Red Kites including two youngsters from this year.
Rowlands Gill - 1 Common Swift flew over.

Thursday 20th August 2009

Kibblesworth Common - 4 Common Snipe but no sign of any Greenshank today.
Lamesley Water Meadows - 1 Green Sandpiper. 200 Goldfinch at the nearby Church Pool and a Common Snipe.
Near Springwell - 1 Common Swift
Derwenthaugh meadows - 20+ Pied Wagtails most of them juvenile’s feeding and fighting plus 2 Willow Warbler.
Stella/Stargate - 2+ Green Woodpecker including a juvenile.

Stargate Quarry - A Dingy Skipper, in very good condition, implies this is a second brood
Cowen Road, Blaydon - 1 Swift, 6 House Martin and a Swallow.
Shibdon Pond - 10, possible 12 Shoveler.

Lamesley- 1 Greenshank still on the pool between the Coalhouse roundabout and another Greenshank plus a Green Sandpiper and 7 Common Snipe on the Water Meadows from the hide.
Derwenthaugh - 2 juvenile Willow Warblers begging for food off the other birds feeding there. First they tried the Redpolls then Pied Wagtails , Greenfinches then the Wrens finally the tried a Robin

Lamesley- 2 Greenshank and 2 Green Sandpiper still on the pool between the Coalhouse roundabout and Lamelsey Church with a third Greenshank on the nearby Church Pool that later joined the other two. Also 2 Kingfisher (sat in trees with House Sparrows ) and a report of a possible Curlew Sandpiper
Shibdon Pond - 5 Shoveler. At 11:30 6 Swifts flew west
Derwenthaugh - A Green Woodpecker on field next to Derwent

Lamesley- 1 Greenshank and 1 Green Sandpiper still on the pool between the Coalhouse roundabout and Lamelsey Church.
Bradley Fell - A probable Emperor seen several times. breeding bird summary .... Grasshopper Warblers reeling from several spots, regular Willow Tit including juveniles, numerous singing Yellowhammer & Common Whitethroat, Reed Bunting singing & confirmed breeding Lesser Whitethroat.
Derwenthaugh Marina - 2 young Willow Warblers feeding in the tops of the trees and a Lesser Redpoll feeding fledged young.

Lamesley- 2 Greenshank still on the pool between the Coalhouse roundabout and Lamelsey Church.

River Team near Birtley sewage works - 2 juvenile Goosander - this may have been the first breeding on this river.

Friday 7th August 2009

Teams- 1 Ring Necked Parakeet at Keelman’s Way, Teams this morning at 9.00am. Calling repeatedly before flying over to Newcastle near Arena area.
Cowen Road, Blaydon - One observer was going to pull some weed seedheads from the abandoned hanging basket at his front door but thought...something might want them...and today at 1pm was rewarded with a pair of Bullfinch and at 4pm, a few feet away, a Chiffchaff. Worthy weeds.
