2011
Red Fox and Grey Squirrels noted at Greenside on 1st along with the ubiquidous Rabbit. Roe Deer seen at several sites 2nd-4th. A dead Wood Mouse was found at Cowen Road, Blaydon on 5th.
Wood Mouse on 5th. [Peter Harvey] A Mink was seen at river Derwent at Lintzford on 7th. Another Red Fox was seen at Harlow Green on 9th and the two Common Seals were again off Derwenthaugh on 10th. Another Wood Mouse, this one alive, stealing a sultanas from a Blackbird feeding station in a Ryton garden on 15th. |

Roe Deer continue to be seen at Thornley and other sites throughout the month. A Brown Hare was seen along Fellside Road, Whickham on 7th. A dead Common Toad was found at Shibdon Pond also on 7th. On 11th, the first Bank Voles of the year were seen when 3 were at Far Pasture NR that also had a Noctule Bat flew from the river directly over the car park the same day. It or another of there on 24th in the sunshine. A Roe Der was seen at Stargate the day before and a Frog, victim of a Grey Heron at Far Pasture.

Common Toad
2 possible Brown Long-eared Bat seen to come out of a barn on Ravensworth Fell on 1st. On 3rd the Common Seal was seen again, off Dunston Stiathes, surfacing with a flatfish, probably a Flounder. A Brown Hares were seen at Kibblesworth on 6th and Greenside on 19th. Roe Deer at Strother Hills on 20th.

Another Brown Long-eared Bat was noted at Greenside on 23rd. Roe Deer at Thornley again on 23rd when many Common Toads were seen spawning at Clara Vale LNR and others seen elsewhere. Pipistrelle Bats at Axwell Park on 24th and a Hedgehog at Cowen Road, Blaydon on 25th. A Roe Deer at Ryton was seen on 27th. Two days later, 2 Brown Hare were seen on Ravensworth Fell and a Red Fox at Stella.

Both Common Frog & Common Toad were spawning at many sites by the end of the month.

At Timber Beach on 2nd, 2 Common Seals resting on the mudflats at low tide, one much larger than the other, 1 still there next day until the 5th (the smaller one).

2 Roe Deer were at Lamesley Water Meadows also on 3rd and at several sites in the Derwent valley during the first half of the month.

On the 8th there was a report of a famliy of three Otters on river near Goodshields Lake about 3 weeks ago.
A Badger was foun dead on Ravensworth Fell by the roadside on 9th and a live animal was caught on videocam in the Derwent valley on 13th. Evidence of Hedgehogs in a garden at Cowen Road, Blaydon also on 13th. More Roe Deer were on Bradley Fell on 20th and Brown Hares noted at several sites mid month. A Stoat was at Clara Vale on 22nd.

The 'Bio-blitz' on the 4th produced 4 Amphibians - Common Toad ,Common Frog ,Palmate Newt and Smooth Newt
The 'Bio-blitz' on the 4th produced 3 Fish - Brown Trout. 3-spined Stickleback and Minnow
The 'Bio-blitz' on the 4th produced 4 Amphibians - Roe Deer, Bank Vole, Common Shrew, Daubenton's Bat, Natterer's Bat, Noctule Bat, Rabbit, Common Pipistrelle, Soprano Pipistrelle, Grey Squirrel and Northern Mole
Several Pipistrelle over Awell Park on 25th and an Otter was noted by the ITV Studios at Derwenthaugh on 27th.
A Mink was at Winlaton on the Derwent on 30th
The Common Seal remained at Timber Beach most of the month. A Red-eared Terrapin was seen again at Sled Lane Pond on 4th. On the 9th, a good sighting of an adult Otter at 23:30 . It ran across the A694 in front of one observer's car about 20 yards from the roundabout near Blaydon Rugby Club. It was heading into the Derwent having presumably been in Axwell Park lake. Hope it doesn't cross that road too often!
