FEBRUARY 2010

Bank Vole noted at Hagghill on 14th and another at Far PAsture on 21st. Red Foxes continue to show at several sites and signs of Otter were noted at both Shibdon and on the Tyne during the month. The Common Seal continues to be seen in the Tyne in the Dunston area and Roe Deer were seen at 4 sites. Signs of spring showed at Shibdon with 4 Grey Squirrels playing and Brown Hares pairing up on Ravensworth Fell. A Magpie chasing a Wood Mouse and catching  it and flying off with it.

Roe Deer

At one site one of nature’s special moments was witnessed when 3 Roe Deer were being watched feeding when along came two Red Foxes and they seemed to single out one of the deer. One of the foxes began to run round it just like a collie dog does with sheep, the deer just stood its ground and began stamping the ground, after a couple of minutes the deer seemed to say enough and charged the fox , after which both foxes just casually wandered off.
