2 Otters were watched playing in the snow by the Derwent at Gibside on 21st

The same day as the Otters, a Red Fox was watched hunting for Voles at Maryside. Another Red Fox was seen crossing Durham Road in Low Fell between the Library and the Bowling Club at 8.30 pm on Boxing Day |

| Bank Vole noted again at Far Pasture

and a large Common Toad was seen at Cowen Road, Blaydon on 26th. A Short-tailed Field Vole found dead in Cowen Road, Blaydon and a Common Seal on the river Tyne of Timber beach most of the month with two there on 27th.

A Badger at Far Pasture NR was seen at 21:00hrs crossing the path to the car-park. The Common Seal again at Timber beach on 10th and 11th and even appeared on the local tea-time BBC News. Shibdon Pond held 2 Daubenton's, 3 Noctule and a Pipistrelle Bat on 11th with another Pipistrelle at Axwell Park the next day. A Brown Rat seen on Pennyfine Road, Lamesley on 13th and a Common Frog nearby. |

A young Red Fox cub came to Thornley feeding station on 8th

| Grey Seal again noted on the Tyne at Timber Beach on 5th and Otter at Axwell Park on 20th. A Weasel was seen near Streetgate on 25th. |

Brown Rats still at Lamesley Water Meadows with another found dead early month and the Roe Deer are still visiting the feeding station area at Thornley WC and continued to do so all month

Brown Rats continue to show well at Lamesley Water Meadows like it or not! One was watched caught by Red Fox at Clara Vale LNR on 23rd.

A Wood Mouse was seen at Thornley on 1st and Lamesley water Meadows on 54th. A Grey Seal on the Tyne at Dunston on 2nd. Hedgehogs seen at Low Thornley on 5th and Hagghill on 6th

A Wood Mouse vistited a garden at Ryton on 9th when a Weasel was seen at Birtley reedbed pools [it was seen again 2 days later]. More Wood mice were seen at Ryton and Thornley 12th-14th and Roe Deer, Bank Vole and Red Fox were seen at Thornley on 13th.

Several Brown Rats are now resident around the hide at Lamesley Water Meadows

MARCH 2009 |
Dead Brown Rats were seen at Birtley reedbeds and Lamesley Water Meadows on 1st and 2 Bank Voles were seen at Far Pasture NR on 2nd. Roe Deer continue to show well as Thornley WC and other sites. Stoat seen twice at Bowes valley NR on 4th when a Weasel was seen nearby at the Birtley reedbeds. The first Hedgehog tracks were at in a garden in Rowlands Gill on 4th. Bank Voles again present at Far Pasture on 8th & 9th. Roe Deer were also noted in the Lamesley/Kibblesworth area on 16th. Many Common Toads were at Clara Vale on 19th when Brown Hares were watched boxing at Lamesley and Ravensworth Fell.

The warm sunshine on 20th March produced a Noctule Bat at Shibdon and 3 Pipistrelle and 1 possible Daubenton's Bat at Far Pasture NR. The 29th had a Common Seal at Dunston as well as the reglar sightings of Roe Deer and the 30th produced another record of Bank Vole.

A Stoat was at Thornley again on on 9th and 21st

A Pipestrelle Bat was rescued in Whickham from a house renovation on Friday 13th and a Red Fox was seen on the 15th at Hagg Hill Woods and another at Kibblesworth Common the next day. Roe Deer showed well at Thornley on 13th-20th when 4 were present.

The Common Seal was seen again, this time in the river at Costco on 20th. Brown Hares regular behind the Ravensworth Arms at Lamesley during the last week of the month. A Bank Vole was at Far Pasture on 28th. |
