153 Species recorded so far in 2007 plus introduced Red Kite and escaped Harris Hawk and Ring-necked Parakeet.Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Shag, Hen Harrier and Puffin reported but not included in the totals as no details yet available. Also the subspecies Scandinavian Herring Gull, Kumlien's Gull, Continental Cormorant and White Wagtail.

23 Species of Butterfly recorded in 2007, 14 species of Dragonfly and 441 species of plant in flower.

Dragonflies-Red-veined, Yellow-veined Darters, and Black-tailed Skimmer
Butterflies - Green Hairstreak, Dark Green Fritillary and Clouded Yellow

152 Species were recorded in 2006 plus introduced Red Kite and escaped Ring-necked Parakeet. Also 4 subspecies White & Blue-headed Wagtail, Scandinavian Herring and Scandinavian Lesser Black-backed Gulls.

144 species were recorded in 2004 plus escaped White Stork, Wood Duck and introduced Red Kite.

Gateshead Birders is a group of very keen birders who study and record the natural history throughout the borough. Gateshead has several countryside sites owned and managed by the Council and these are freely open for visitors to enjoy a wide range of woodlands, meadows, ponds and riverside walks and bridleways. Shibdon Pond - Common Sandpiper early morning

Lamesley Water Meadows - 2 Black-tailed Godwit - morning only.
Hedley Hall Woods - Grasshopper Warbler.
Rough ground in Dunston/Metrocentre area - 2 pair of Little Ringled Plover, 1 pair of Oyster-catcher and a pair of Ringed Plover breeding. Also singing Gartden Warbler, Blackcap and Sedge Warbler.
Crawcrook Quarry - Lesser Whitethroat
Shibdon Pond -3 Reed Warbler and a Water Rail. An unconfirmed report of an Arctic Tern here. [The Black Terns departed about 17:00hrs yesterday]

Shibdon Pond - 4 Common Tern, 2 Sedge and 1 Reed Warbler. At lunchtime 3 Black Tern arrived (new for the year). Spotted Flycatcher (also new for the year) noted in the reserve

Shibdon Pond - Reed Warbler (new for year) and Sedge Warbler singing in the reserve.Peacock ,Comma, Small Tortoiseshell, Small White and Orange tip Butterflies on the wing. 4 Common Terns on the pond
Birtley - Large White Butterfly - the first of the year. Oystercatchers nesting again on the roof of the Komatsu building
Birtley sewage works - 2 Garden Warbler, 4 Sedge Warbler, Blackcap, Common Whitethroat present
Derwenthaugh Meadows - Little Ringed Plover, Common Shelduck and Oyster-catcher with both Herring Gull and Lesser Black-backed Gulls nesting on the nearby factory roofs.

Friday 2nd May 2008

Birtley sewage works - Garden Warbler and Green Woodpecker still present and 2 Little Ringed Plover in the adjacent field.
Shibdon Pond -Pair of Orange-tip Butterfly and the first Common Terns have arrived back on the pond. Canada Goose with Goslings noted


Bradley Fell old workings - Garden Warbler this afternoon plus several Blackcap, Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff. Also Great Spotted Woodpecker nearby earlier.
Team valley Trading Estate - Grey Heron in the River on Team valley by First Avenue . Sparrowhawk hunting on the wasteground at the back of Royal Mails train platform also Chiffchaff singing in the same area . Four Mallards which seem to have taken up residence by the loading bays in Royal Mails distribution yard
Winlaton - Grasshopper Warbler singing at Heather's Field
